1)
Super Mario 3D World - I haven't had this much fun with a Mario game since I was a child. Fantastic experience.
2)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Although skeptical about the value after playing the Wii release extensively, this adds a ton of content and improvements over that release and remains the best console Monster Hunter release.
3)
LEGO City Undercover - LEGO games aren't really my thing and loading times are ridiculous. But it's a very well made, family-friendly open world game that makes very good use of the Wii U control pad. Best surprise on the system for me.
4)
Pikmin 3 - The only downside is relatively low replay value for the main campaign, but there are some great extra modes to come back and enjoy. After playing this gorgeous sequel, it was hard going back to the Gamecube releases.
5)
ZombiU - Most people won't enjoy it as much as I did, but the game does a lot of things that appeal to me and remains one of the more interesting (even if you kind of hate it) exclusives.
6)
Super Smash Bros for Wii U - see comment for #7
7)
Need for Speed Most Wanted U - Not usually a type of game I enjoy, but so well made that I had a blast playing anyway.
Rayman Legends - High expectations weren't met, but still the best 2D platformer on the console. Best version of the game in my opinion.
9)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut - Great game with some solid improvements for this release. Worth owning.
10)
Bayonetta 2 - Not a game genre I love, and lots of weirdness in this game... but the quality is impossible to ignore.
Missed the cut:
*
Mass Effect 3 is a fantastic port marred by stupid business decisions;
*
NintendoLand is a great multiplayer experience but not worth owning for single player modes;
*
Zelda Windwaker remake just didn't iterate enough to make my top 10 list - even the old SD GameCube graphics still hold up well due to art style.
Special shout-out to some incredible eShop-only games:
1)
Toki Tori 2 - One of the best gaming experiences I've had in years. Doesn't hold your hand, but slowly reveals all kinds of gameplay tricks and secrets that allow you to advance. Demands that players pay attention to their environment and constantly use their head.
2)
Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones - It wasn't what I expected but was always enjoyable. More people should give this game a shot!
3)
Lucadian Chronicles - "Free to play" is a bit of a misnomer because it doesn't follow traditional free to play models. It's more like the old ShareWare model where you can freely download and play a portion of the game, and then choose if you want the full featured version unlocked for a small fee. (I bought in, and it's been worth every penny.)
Shantae, Shovel Knight, and
Child of Light all look very good but I haven't had any time to play them yet.
Metroid Prime Trilogy is a no-brainer but more of a Wii game in my mind so left off the list.
