Does the SD slot on the Wii U do anything for the Wii U?
« on: February 23, 2015, 12:37:17 AM »
Or is it there just for wii backwards compatibility? I was thinking (again) games like Xenoblade X and Zelda U are going to be pushing the limits of 25GB of space. Since the price of SD media is fairly cheap could a company pack in a pre formatted  card with additional content that has to be inserted to play. I am aware that day one patches also can remedy this issue but that seems less intuitive than simple add a card in the box. Like adding a 8GB card in the box.

But I don't think the SD slot does anything for the U anyway so it may be a moot theory.

That's what external HDDs are for. And games on disc can easily be more than that.

How can Wii U games more than 25GB? I'm not sure the laser is capable of dual-layering but you may know.
(2- disc?)

Wii U discs are pretty much Blu-rays, so they can fill up to 50 GBs into one disc.

We already know X is 22.7GB. Zelda will either match that or be just under.

SD cards cannot be used as external storage for Wii U software. Also, do you really want to put part of your game data on an SD card? Can you even make read-only SD cards?

You can make SD cards read-only. Most if not all the ones I've ever seen have a little tab on them for switching writability on and off, so I assume you could make ones that only work for reading.

I would hate to lose out on content cause the developer ran outta space. I know the Xenoblade guys said the almost ran out and I'm wondering if we are going to lose dual audio cause of said restrictions.

You can load GameCube games off of it with Nintendont. Also, you should be able to put Wii VC titles on there.
