The Windows/microsoft thread of not knowing how to count.
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:11:54 PM »
So the next version of Windows just got announced today being Windows 10.

Today's reveal was just for enterprise user's and the consumer facing Reveal showing off the full gambit will be ready for next year's build and the OS will release in the middle of next year.

Here's the main blog post
http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/09/30/announcing-windows-10/

and i'll be updating the OP with more information.

It seems that Windows Phone is now just Windows and will be running Windows 10, and the Xbox One will be getting the update in the middle of next year as well.

Microsoft skips Windows 9 and goes straight to 10. This is the same company that went from 360 to One. At least they're going forward this time. That's progress.

There is no Xbox One in that lineup.

There's no Xbone in the picture (or mention of one), but if you look at the screen above the Kinect, it's covered in Xbox games and apps (Ori, NFL Now, Minecraft, Forza Horizon 2...). Sounds cool, and is a much better idea than the concept release of Windows 8/8.1. Same OS, different UI depending on the device.

Skipping to 10 is just to distance from 8.  Which I have a feeling those people where part of the readjustment for Microsoft.  I can't believe with all there research might they ended up with how 8 worked.  Basic testing would have told you that you couldn't make a general UI for all devices.

The farthest screen to the right with the Kinect under it is the xbox one. If you zoom into the screen you see an Xbox Avatar, the new iconography for user icons, as well as tiles for Forza Horizon 2, Minecraft, and Ori and the Blind forest.

Doh, I guess that is their representation. Speaking of which, didn't they say at one time the Kinect was coming to other platforms like the PC?

Kinect 2.0 is out for windows I believe. There was also some internal trails of Kinect embedded into laptops but that never went anywhere.

This is what Windows 8 should have been, I blame Steven Sinofsky for taking to get this long. Its funny that even though early previews of this are getting praise this is still every OS in One just it conforms smartly to each form factor and doesn't feel like everything is being held together by tape. One big issue that they will have to change is updating all the iconography alongside the streamlined UI.

My tech upgrades will be ready around the time this launches so i'll be interested to see the state of Windows vs Android by next year. It seems that Google themselves has given up on Native chromebook development in Lieu for porting Android apps to the platform. I hope the surface/nokia team actually puts out more hardware than mobile, and puts out some quality Laptop and desktops.

Xbone is not running Windows 9, it, for the most part runs a stripped down version of Windows 8.

The joke is that Windows alternates between good versions and shitty ones.  ME was terrible, XP as good, Vista sucked, 7 was good, 8 was garbage, etc.  So is MS just skipping the good release (ie: Windows 9) and jumping straight into another shitty one?  Considering that those screenshots show the same tablet focused Metro crap that no one that does any real work on a PC likes I'm guessing they are.

Microsoft, you're the business/games OS guys while Apple are the tablet/artist/non-techie OS guys.  There's nothing wrong with that.  Being the de facto choice for every business in the first world is exactly WHY you're so damn rich in the first place.  Screwing up your OS to go after the tablet market is never going to work because that market loves Apple and Apple does a really good job catering to it.  All you're going to do is piss off your existing customerbase and thus the only thing keeping them with you is a lack of a quality competing product.  That shows up and you're fucked so stick with your longterm customers and don't neglect them in favour of a different market that someone else already has locked up.  What's wrong with making lots of money from a specific audience?  Why does every big company care more about who isn't buying their product than who is?  Do bra companies have meetings discussing how to target the male demographic?

You figure the backlash about Windows 8 and the failure of the Windows Phone and even the Xbox target demo's outright rejection of a mandatory Kinect purchase would clue them in.  Nope let's just keep with the same plan as if everything worked out like we're Square Enix or something.

So Apple's about to release the tenth revision of their tenth operating system, and Microsoft just skips 9 to get right to 10. It's like calling their second console the 360 to not sound outdated compared to the PS3.

To be fair, Microsoft was simply a little over ambitious with Windows 8 and 8.1 - they tried to do too much with too little, and too little with too much. Also, having everything run Windows 10 should help them streamline everything, and will probably cause a significant rise in Windows tablets and Windows phone (no longer with a capital P) sales. I imagine Windows 10 on a phone will require some major horsepower, but by the middle of next year, and especially since Microsoft (Nokia) and HTC are basically the only hardware players, this shouldn't be an issue.

And then they go from 360 to 1.  So the dumb people you needed to fool with the 360 > 3 routine are not going to think 4 > 1 and pick a PS4?  It all sounds like it's coming from the same number-obsessed weirdo but the logic isn't even consistent.  Oh wait logical thinking is required to perform math correctly.  Ha!  Now I see what's going on here.

That's the one after this, which will then be followed by Windows 9.
