What N64 games would you like as bonus disks for Gamecube
« on: June 27, 2003, 06:41:49 AM »
I must say that I really enjoyed the OOT bonus disk. There are a few games from N64 that I would really like to have for my GCN. I definately would like Majora's Mask released with the Wind Waker sequal. I would also like to see Super Mario 64 released. If Nintendo is worried about losing money, I would be willing to pay an extra 10 bucks for the game if it included a bonus disk. Are there any other N64 games that youi guys would like to see re-released for GCN?

I say Nintendo should port some of their best N64 titles to GCN for $10.

If they can get away with those Super Mario SNES ports, why not give us Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 64, Mario Kart 64, or any other title like that?

Huh? Dr. Mario 64? Its close...

I don't know, all of my favorite N64 titles were 3rd Party games (believe it or not). One of them is already on the cube (RE2), and although I am hoping and praying for NextGen incarnations of my other 2 favorite games, I don't see it happening (Forsaken and World Driver Championship).

I say Nintendo should port some of their best N64 titles to GCN for $10.

baaaaaaaaaaad idea.  almost as bad as making it a habit of giving away free bonus discs with games.

if nothing else, look at it this way:

while it may cost very little to port a n64 game over to gc, they would be missing out on lost revenue from selling new games.  for every hour you're reliving a port of a n64 game you're not experiencing a new gc game.  the less time you spend playing new gc games, the less money you spend on gc games.

i can't speak for everyone, but i know when i got zelda:  master quest for free with wind waker, it saved me from having to purchase a different gc game to keep me occupied during the month before wind waker came out.  therefore, nintendo lost $50 they would have received from me for releasing the bonus disc.  i'm sure i'm not the only one who didn't get a different game because they were too busy playing master quest.

i'm going to throw out some fake numbers to prove my point.  let's pretend 25% of the people who got wind waker wouldn't have gotten it unless master quest was given away for free with it (this is a very generous estimate).  now let's pretend 50% of the people who got wind waker did not purchase another gc game they would have otherwise gotten, because they were playing master quest.  if wind waker sold 1 million copies (i'm lowering the number to make it easier on my math) nintendo lost 250,000 sales.  multiply that by average dollars per sale (i have no idea on this one...10?  20?  i'll pretend $10 for discussion's sake) and nintendo lost $2.5 million by releasing the master quest disc for free with wind waker.

you could argue that by giving away the free game disc, it sold more wind waker units, which sold more console units, and therefore increases the potential for future revenue by getting more gamecube units out there, but as i already alluded to before, people bought wind waker to play wind waker.  the bonus disc was a nice addition, but i do not think it pushed sales by that much (preorders, yes.  but not overall sales).

in short, it's my estimate that nintendo loses money by releasing bonus discs (containing full games; demo discs are another story all together).  my numbers are based on pure speculation, so if anyone have any hard numbers they'd like to throw out, please do.

***

but as long as we're taking about what games we'd like to see as bonus discs, i wouldn't mind that remixed starfox for snes that everyone's taking about.

Ok kingvudu nice math but,i think what DJR meant was that what 64 games would we LIKE to see on the cube, not really saying it was going to happen XD.Anyway,i would like to see banjo kazooie and banjo tooie on a gamecube disc (since they would both fit) Which takes me to say that IF rareware was still working for nintendo, they could make the big secret with the 6 eggs and the ice key work(those of you who had the games and had been on the rare witch project forums know what im talking about)Which COULD of been the biggest secret in the N64 history (sorry im getting carried away now,i will stop)

I always wanted to do that...

Um one simple solution for KINGVUDU's theory....

When you pre-order Mario-Kart DD, and let's say you get a bonus disk with MarioKart 64 and MarioKart SNes on it. Unlike Windwaker you don't get the game WHEN you pre-order it, you get it WHEN you purchase the rest of Mario-Kart DD. Then people will buy that "waiting" game and also have the incentive to buy Mario-Kart DD therefore increasing profits all around.

If Rare was still with Nintendo, I would have liked to see them make a sequel to Jet Force Gemini and possibly have the original as a bonus disk, since that game owned.  Sadly, they are whoring themselves to Microsoft.

F-Zero X complete with the expansion that never came out to the US would be a neat bonus disk for F-Zero GC.  Mario Kart 64 would be neat with the upcoming Mario Kart, too.

I would like to see Pilot Wings or Blast Corps on a disc.  I could borrow Zelda or mario or Jet Force Gemini from plenty of N64 owners that I know(Since I no longer have mine).  But Pilotwings and Blast Corps were a lot of fun whlie being a little less popular.

sorry, wouldn't fix the problem.  when you got finished with mario kart dd you would move onto mario kart and mario kart 64 (although why you would want to play those games when you had dd is beyond me) instead of purchasing the next new nintendo game.  they'd still be out the money.

I think that you are totally wrong, kingvudu.  First off, The Wind Waker wouldn't have sold nearly as many copies as it did without the assistance of the bonus disc.  Second, ports of old games are merely incentives for true fans (people who buy Nintendo's product already).  If you think the Zelda bonus disc made anyone not spend money on GC games that they would've spent already, you're crazy... GC users are totally different than PS2 users.  Most of us aren't just looking for a game to play until our next game... the standard GC user seems to me to be interested in *all* good games (and ONLY good games), and they also seem to have a flair for nostalgia on top of that.  The only money Nintendo loses on the bonus discs is how much it costs them to make them... and they gain respect from it in the press, which is worth more than hundreds of times the amount of money they spend on it.  Nintendo needs to do more things like this to help their position, and I think that a bonus disc for F-Zero would not only be a great idea for personal reasons, but for their appearance in the media and on a whole to the entire industry.

Remember Nintendo's position and know that they're fighting an uphill battle.  They need to rely on their backcatalogue, it's on of their strongest assets.  Combined with their high standard for quality in new titles too, it could be one of the blows that turns the tide next generation... if they keep it up, and if the NES 5 is backward-compatible.

Also, in response to why we'd want to play Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64... some of us were around for these games when they came out, and we appreciate and love them to this day.  I still play Super Mario Kart, and enjoy it.  If it (and Mario Kart 64) were available on a pre-order disc, I would be very pleased.

As for my suggestion?  I'm surprised no one has said this, but I would bundle StarFox 64 with StarFox Armada before anything else.  I think SF64 was probably the best game for the N64, Mario and Zeldas included.  I probably would eventually find some way to put Super Mario 64 on the GC as well... however, I'm getting the impression that Super Mario 128 will not be a GC game but an NES 5 launch title instead, so they may have to figure out another way to get it on the system.  Other than that, there aren't many other choices... they've already done Ocarina and the Ocarina Master Quest.  The only titles I'd do bonus discs for would be Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, StarFox 64, F-Zero 64 (plus 64DD add-ons), and Majora's Mask.  Only the five-star first-party Nintendo titles are necessary, anything else is frivelous.  Rare titles, all the like, have no place on the GC.

I dont know if Nintedo really loses money on bonus disks, but I dont care if they do. I am the consumer and I want more, more, more. If I dont get bonus disks I will still buy Nintendo games 'cause they are great, if there are bonus disks of older games that is just a very nice treat. I mean if you gave me Super Mario 64 with the new Mario GCN game I would play it for about 5-10 hours beat it and move on to the next game, but I wouldnt stop buying games just 'cause I have a bonus disk. I dont really think that Nintendo will release too many more, if any more bonus disks of full games, but IF they did I would be very happy with them.

One thing that is good about PS2 (even tho I dont own one) is that there are tons of games for $5-$10 (new and used games for PS1). Take my brothers for example, they get just as much (actually more) pleasure out of playing Turok than playing Metroid Prime. I picked up turok for $10 at best buy a few months back and they love it. Now imagine if Nintendo released 100s of games from N64 and sold them for cheap $10-$20 each. They would sell tons and make lots of money. I would only buy the select few that very outstanding, but many people would buy all of these up even if some of the games were crap.

Nintendo just included over 1000 games with the release of the GBP, N64 should be next.

Also I dont necessarily think that the games should be given away free, thats just a nice touch. Price them appropriately and I would buy them.

and btw releasing OOT did pump up the initial sales of WW. And that is at $50 a pop for the game, now they are like $20 on ebay since Nintendo gives them away free with GCN. 600,000 preorders is huge and all they had to do to sweaten the deal was release a game that was just collecting dust on their shelves. And also note that there were this many preorders with a lot of people complaining about the graphics (which I will go on the record as saying that they graphics fit the game perfectly).

I've said it before here, but I think that the original N64 Rogue Squadron would make an excellent bonus for pre-ordering RS3.  You'd have the original, the second in the form of co-op missions, as well as the all new game.  Heck, if they wanted to, they could add in "Battle for Naboo" and you'd basically have all of Factor 5's Star Wars games in one package!

evilnate, that's actually a great idea.  So add a higher resolution version of Rogue Squadron to my list.

As for Paper Mario, it's far too niche.  It's impractical.  And again, Rare games need not apply... on top of the fact that Rare is no longer Nintendo's company, they also no longer possess the James Bond license.  Besides that, GoldenEye is too dated to be offered as an upped-resolution bonus.  Most N64 games (save the 1st party ones) age *horribly*, especially compared to SNES games which age like wine (and NES games, which don't age as well as SNES but *way* better than N64).

Only the classics need apply.  GoldenEye would be far better represented if EA, who is supposedly doing a new version of it, got Free Radical to be the dev team.  That way, we'd have a remade GoldenEye for GC that was by a lot of the original GoldenEye team.  A simple port would remind everyone exactly how ugly the game is, and that's not something the common public can look on lightly.

Actually, I think the reasoning behind giving away the Bonus Zelda disc was two-fold. One was because The Wind Waker was a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. It was a great chance for players not familiar with Ocarina to get to learn more about it, which made the experience playing The Wind Waker, set in the same world centuries after Ocarina, so much more fulfilling.
Secondly, it wasn't just a direct port of Ocarina of Time, it also included Master Quest, which was the main draw for myself, since I played the N64 game to death. If they included Star Fox 64 as a bonus for ordering Namco's SF game, they should at least add some sort of remixed version, or even go as far as to include the legendary lost Star Fox 2, which I'm sure MANY gamers would be interested in.
Also, kingvudu, I don't think giving away bonus discs would take any profit away from other Gamecube games. The Zelda disc came out in Feburary, and I honestly don't remember any noteable GC releases during that month anyway. Besides, I'm sure a lot of gamers, like me, don't buy a new game every month.

i honestly couldn't agree with you more.  for me, money isn't the limiting factor in the games i play...time is.  i simply do not have enough time to play all the great games that are coming out.  however, when master quest was released for free with wind waker, it was enough that i had to push another game i would have played instead off my list (probably resident evil 0, in this particular case).  thus, nintendo lost out on money.  and i'm sure that i'm not the only one this happened to.

Quote

ports of old games are merely incentives for true fans (people who buy Nintendo's product already).

if true fans are going to buy the game anyway, why do they need incentive?

Quote

Also, in response to why we'd want to play Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64... some of us were around for these games when they came out, and we appreciate and love them to this day.

i have to say, i almost resent this comment.  it seems like you're insinuating that i'm some 12 year old punk kid who wasn't around for the snes.  i'm 23 years old, i've been playing nintendo games since the original nes, and i've owned both existing versions of mario kart.  all i was saying is that with some types of games--most often sports games--when the new version gets released, the old version gets replaced.  and while i'm certainly not saying this holds true for everybody or for all games, it happens fairly often.  (example:  madden 2003 pretty much replaces madden 2002)

Quote

As for my suggestion?

the only worthwhile suggestion in the bunch was the starfox 64dd add-on.  the point of the oot/master quest bonus disc (as joshnickerson so kindly pointed out) was to get master quest into the hands of u.s. consumers.  since it was never released, we had never had the chance to play it.  if you want to play mario 64 break out your n64.

Yes one thing that would solve this problem is to make an add-on part to hook to your gamecube that lets you slip a n64 game into the add-on part and play the game that way. what is it possible? could they do that? I would definitly get it if it happened.

WCW is the WWE now so itd be much easyer to port all those games to GCN, though whats the point.  No Mercy has everything all its predecessors had, just with better graphics and the WWF lable.  Just port that, though with all the wCw Entrance stages in it.  Imagine that, being able to have Stone cold come down to the Nitro ring.  Or sting coming down from the rafters at Wrestlemania.  Itd be great!

I'd like to see Majora's Mask above anything else(possibly bundled with the next GC Zelda game). It was my favorite N64 game, hands down.
