On the other hand, I really don't need this much Fire Emblem in Smash. I always thought the FE characters in Smash were too similar and, honestly, a little boring. So the thought of having Ike, Marth, Chrom, and Lucina, all sword-wielders, seems like overkill. At least 'Robin' seems to be bringing something Unique with his/her Tomes.

I have good news for you then... You misinterpreted the video, Chrom was merely a tease meant to make us think he going to be the reveal, allowing them to catch us off guard with the real newcomers. The end demonstrated, that Chrom will merely be an assist trophy (or possibly a Final Smash). You now have one less sword-wielder to worry about.

Ah, ok. Fair enough.

I still maintain, however, that FE has a deep catalogue of characters to pull from. For instance, I was kind of hoping that Donnel would be included. In Awakening, I spent so much time keeping that guy alive just because I liked his down-to-earth perspective, and eventually he became one of my strongest characters.

Man, I really need to play Awakening again. That game was incredible.

On a related note...what the hell happened to the 3DS? I haven't enjoyed a 3DS game since ALBW.

Fire Emblem has more possible playable characters than any Nintendo series outside of Pokemon.

So...after wAtching the reveal video again, it seems like Robin's spell book moves very closely resemble Ness' moveset...anyone think it's possible ness is going bye bye?  Or maybe is he replacing Lucas' slot?

Ness isn't going anywhere. If Lucina is Marth's alt, Lucas would be an obvious alt for Ness. I kind of hope we get Paula and Kumatora (both of whom actually learn PK Fire in Earthbound and Mother 3 respectively).

Pixelated Pixies brought up my exact point!  Thanks.  If as a Nintendo entity Smash Bros is responsible for representing the wide array of franchises to new players, how come there are no axe or lance wielders in the Fire Emblem roster?

Now I do love the diversity they have in the sword-wielders.  Ike's big sword doesn't handle like Marth's thinner, more agile sword, and though Robin also has a sword he casts spells.  This said, the weapons triad is a HUGE part of Fire Emblem's DNA.  I wouldn't expect Smash to actually implement that rock-paper-scissors system of effectiveness, but their place in the game would be incredibly beneficial.

Unless the "newcomer" label for Lucina turns out to be a fluke and she actually ends up as a Marth skin, she'll simply be that one sword too many that could have been an axe or a lance.  I do have to wonder what kind of recovery a lancer would have, considering they primarily ride horseback.  Maybe they'd be horseless for this.

Nephenee and Ephraim (pre-Great Lord) say high. Along with all of the game's General-class characters. Watch some videos to get an idea of how an on foot lance wielder could work.

I am in the lance-loving camp. Getting the Tactician character is a nice plus, and one I suspected they would use, but I do hope be get some more alternate weapon characters at some point.

*continues waiting* for Ray. Or at the very minimum, some mention to the Disaster universe.

There need to be two Rays: the one from Disaster: Day of Crisis and one from Custom Robo. Or if Sakurai really wanted to troll, make those both different costumes of the same character.

With floating exploding bears that unleash tornadoes?

The bear and tornado can be assist trophies.

Well Sakurai just revealed on Miiverse that Lucina is not an alt for Marth but an actual selectable character.  It turns out she's a Melee style clone who shares the same animations and every attack, but each attack has different strengths since her sword shares the same power throughout instead of Marth who has his strongest attacks at the tip.

His exact quotes.

Quote
Pic of the day. Along with Robin, Lucina joins the battle!! Her physical ablilites are identical to Marth's--it must be in her D.N.A. However, where Marth's power is concentrated in the tip of the sword, Lucina's attack strength is balanced throughout the weapon, which might make her easier to control. She's also a little bit shorter than Marth.

Quote
With the Wii Fit Trainers, the male and female Robins, the Villagers, and Little Mac, varying their appearances and voices works just like selecting alternate color variations. However, whenever there is even a small difference in abilities, that character gets an actual roster slot. That is why you can select Lucina individually.

Of course the way he says the last one pretty much makes it sound like several other clones like this are in as well.  Looks like we're about to get a pretty damn big character select screen this time.  If Fire Emblem is getting 4 characters on the select screen, then quite a few other franchises are going to get their roster bumped up thanks to clones as well.

Holy ****, we could literally be looking at a Marvel vs Capcom 2 sized roster if Sakurai goes crazy with these clones, which he easily could since ones like Lucina are very easy to make.

If there is going to be a significant number of clones included this time around, then Lucas should be safe.

Maybe Dr. Mario comes back as more than an alt.

See, that's what I told the judge in my case as well but apparently the law calls it domestic violence and the court acts as if it is some sort of crime. I still think that if my brother and I can throw punches at each other if we get in a fight and still get along, it should only be right I can throw punches at my mom when we fight and still get along. Women only want to play the equality game when they can see some benefit not if it puts them at a disadvantage. The more you know.

3) At least it wasn't Ridley.  I clearly don't understand why this character is requested so much in Smash, as I can't see how they'd make him playable in a way that's fun.  I'd be willing to hear an argument otherwise, though.

"At least it wasn't Ridley" ? AT LEAST IT WASN'T RIDLEY?!?!?!?!?!

Ridley would be an awesome addition! The character who basically made Samus who she is and the only important reoccuring character  from the franchise! Last gen he had a big role in Prime 3, Other M and even in Smash Bros it's self. Did you see how prominently he was featured in the Other M commercial? Ridley has lots of mind share in the minds of Metroid fans. He may not be silly like Bowser or Dedede and he's certainly not as charming as Ganondorf or Hades but he's still a brilliant, robot building, pirate dragon in space! What is not to like?

Fire Emblem gets its best selling entry yet and now it gets 4 reps which is just fine by me. Lucina doesn't even take that much resources. Fire Emblems biggest success sales wise is basically Metroids lowest point with Other M so I think Metroid deserves one more with that one being Ridley.

Ridley has been many sizes before. Metroid, Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Prime, Other M, Melee, Brawl... Ridley has never been the same size. Sometimes he is completely manageable and sometimes not. Metroid, Melee, Other M commercial and even super Metroid  all have reasonable size Ridleys for playability. Even if he was always big characters always change size depending on gameplay necessity. Do you know how small Olimar, Pikachu and Squirtle really are? They are massive comparitively to other fighters in Smash and it just doesn't matter. It's ok to fight on a teenie tiny great fox or have Ganondorf as small as a childs playing blocks but its weird for Ridley to be about the size of Bowser in Smash? Yeah ok. I guess people who don't want Ridley were pissed they shrunk Honey Queen for Mario Kart 7.

Ridley has a tail that can stretch but if you look at the ripped models from Brawl, Ridleys tail is surprisingly short. Don't give it a long hurt box and he is good to go. But his wings are too big you say? Charizards wings in Brawl are bigger than any pair of wings Ridley has had in the 2D metroids. Look back at how small those things are! Give something that is Bowser's size or a little bigger with Charizard's wings and hurt box mechanics and you have absolutely no issue.

Oh but his neck! What ever what Sakurai's team do?! Keep it folded up like it always is only extending to bite or give him the think Other m/Prime 3 neck. Why is that so hard?!

Give him Bowser's hunched posture! He almost never stands up right to begin with so he can be big in Smash. Give him Charizard's wings and tail. Give him Donkey Kong's long arms and make him run on his hands and feet like he did in ALL the 3D Metroids! There you have it, a good body conceptualized by yours truly!

Moveset. Look at all the moves he did in Brawl? He fought just like Dyna Blade! Which makes sense considering what they are. Bowser is much less animalistic now so Ridley can fill that void. Now then, don't like those moves well then like these:

Jabs - Claw swipe X2, tail stab.
Forward Tilt - Bite.
Up Tilt - Wing attack/upward tail stab.
Down Tilt - Tail Sweep

Dash - Rushing pounce like a Xenomorph.

D Air - Pogo tail(remember that from Super Metroid)

F Smash - Tail drill.
U Smash - Jumping bite.

Specials would include fire balls, a grappling tail that could yank others out of the sky and super fast and far reaching dashes across the screen, think Ike.

Imagine his grabs? D Grab - shuttle loop and grind them against ground. Oh and mid air grabs like Bowser. It would be spectacular!

Give him 3 jumps and flying mechanic like Peach and woah you've got something good!

His physical body alone gives so much to work with, why wouldn't anyone want that? Or at the very least why hope against it?

There is some real and deliberate teasing going on with Ridley. Sad thing is I am almost certain its only for a special Wii U only playable boss mode. 1 VS 4.

Now come on, who else shares in my enthusiasm for the true Space Pirate leader?!

Nintendo players and One Piece readers, just better people.

I'm with you, Cater. Believe it, I want Ridley playable in Smash 4, too. There's no valid excuse whatsoever as to why he shouldn't make it in the game as playable.

Ridley deserves a character spot on the roster just as much as Bowser, Ganondorf, and King Dedede do.
