The Landon Donovan Tribute Thread
« on: July 09, 2014, 01:40:19 PM »
Since there's some kind of soccer tournament going on, I figured that this would make a great occasion to talk about my favorite soccer player, Landon Donovan.

The man is supremely gifted. In Major League Soccer, Donovan has won five MLS Cups and is the league's all-time top scorer with 136 goals, You'd probably think he had to play 3,487 games to score that many goals in soccer but you'd be wrong. It's appearantly less than that.

But Donovan isn't just great when playing in an American League but also on a world stage. For the United States men's national team, Donovan is the all-time leader in scoring and assists, and has the most caps of all active players. I don't know what caps are but I think they must be important to be mentioned. And you know how some people can be good at scoring and others at assisting? Donovan is great at both. A true threat on the field.

How good is he? According to foxsports, he is the greatest USA soccer player of all time. Yes, Landon Donovan is a True American Hero. In fact, foxsports goes on to say, "With Donovan on the field, the USA are dangerous; without him, they are average." Yes, with Donovan in the prime of his life and career, having him play for the USA in soccer is the smartest decision one can make.

Could you imagine a USA soccer team without him? It would probably suck real bad and end up being a national disgrace. Oh, I'm sure there'd be some lunatic fringe that would try and defend such a team and poor decision making. But anyone with an I.Q. of 50 and above would be able to recognize right away that not having the all-time caps leader on such a team would clearly be a recipe for disaster and that to win would require an act of God. Speaking of an act of God...... Landon Donovan.

Anyways, that's all I wanted to say right now. Anyone else really appreciate the way Landon Donovan gives his heart, body and soul to the game unlike other players such as Dempsey and other ones not named Landon Donovan so I haven't bothered to learn their names or care about?

I want to be upset, but the fact that you went to that amount of trouble just to spite me makes me feel like I must be doing something right.

I'm more of a fan of Tim Howard after watching him be the only reason USA went out with a shred of dignity, unlike Brazil.

Howard deserves a ton of credit for that result, but he doesn't have nearly as impressive a stat line without Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez having great games of their own in front of him, and yet nobody's making stupid memes about them.

Who was the kid that landed that one goal? Apparently that was the first time he had played and his first contact with the ball led to a goal. They said his mother still drives him to practice he is so young.

Julian Green. 18 years old, and wasn't even eligible to play for the U.S. until filing paperwork in March. It's funny looking back that probably the most criticized roster selections by Klinsmann were him, John Anthony Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin, and they scored 2 of the 5 goals we got and all played impressively well.

You know who I think is really great, though? Lance Johnson. One of the best young players in the U.S. system. Didn't make this World Cup team, but he's a guy to watch in the future. With guys like Dempsey and Jermaine Jones having likely played their last match in the World Cup, we need some new talent to step up.

It's like the same thing as a roast, right? Where you mock and lob insults at the person it's about, and talk about how much they suck?

I tried to tell you guys through the naming of the funhouse over the 8,000 Mario Maker threads, try to contain each topic into a single thread. One tribute thread for me is all you should need.

And I've clearly shown how multiple threads actually has a better effect than singular one thread only / mega-thread syndrome. Heck, by combining my two joke click-bait threads, you further demonstrated the worthlessness of thread combination.

I'm starting to wonder in the Off-Topic thread isn't a further reason for Funhouse stagnation. In the past, if people wanted to comment about something else going on in the forums, they'd be more willing to make a thread and some effort about it. Like the Wii-U Perma Ban Wager. That could have easily gone into the Off-Topic Comments but not only did Zap have the courage to call out the stupidity of some of the comments made in Talkback, he also showed himself a true defender of the stars and stripes like Landon Donovan by making a separate thread for it.

It's ok to create threads people.

Not to engage in serious discussion in the Funhouse, but while I agree with you to a point, but most of the posts in the Off-Topic thread don't deserve their own full threads, because they're already gigantic wastes of everyone's time. The stuff I post in there is, anyway.

Well, that's it. U.S. soccer is dead. Time to bury it and move on with your lives.

Landon Donovan announces retirement.

Thought I'd post the link to the news story in a way that Insanolord is apparently unable to do.

"Donovan, 32, made the announcement less than 24 hours after scoring the game-winning goal in the MLS All-Stars’ 2-1 win over Bayern Munich."

Another game-winning goal for Landon? No surprise there.

Once again, the list of accomplishments:

"Donovan will retire as inarguably the most successful and transformative player in the history of MLS and U.S. Soccer. He is one of only three five-time winners of MLS Cup and the all-time leading scorer in league history, as well as a six-time MLS Best XI selection. He won the Budweiser Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer in 2008 and followed that by earning the title of league MVP in 2009.

He’s also the all-time leading scorer in US national team history with 57 goals in 156 career appearances, including five goals scored over 12 World Cup games, the most by any player in US history
."

This is all your fault. You didn't honor him enough. I even gave you a thread to do so and you all failed. Don't go Landon. 10 more years! 10 more years! 10 more years!

With Landon Donovan gone, I don't think there are any more Great American Heroes left in the world of sports anymore. Better fly Old Glory at half-mast from now on.
