Europe not embracing online play?

It seems Sony and Microsoft is facing a hard audience in attracting online player. Reuters today gave numbers  that Microsoft released today. It seems where in the US they have attracted around 500k gamers to their service. In Europe they have only found 50k.

There you have it, Sony and Microsofts online plans are getting ever closer to biting the dust. Its become a great hassle between these companies, since 3rd party companies have to pay Sony and Microsoft royalties to develop for their system, not to mention pay for servers that they cant get their customers to fund.

Okay that was probably totally wrong or half-way right, but still, online gaming still belongs to the PC world, as its much cheaper and easier to manage than the consoles.

MS pays for all of it's servers (hense XBox Live annual fee).

Sony leaves it up to the developers but sony & MS both give loans to game developers making online games.

Right now the it seems the US and maybe Japan are the only contries were internet play is being accepted.

Korea has a lot of online gamers, just not console gamers. As for online in europe, I don''t know percentages or anything, but there are quite a few gamers across the pond that I know of.

Well, Sony are planning to launch their online service here in Australia in a matter of weeks. And Microsoft are going to tag along shortly after. Dunno about Nintendo, I think they're playing it safe and seeing just how it all pans out. Online gaming isn't that big here. In fact, if it wasn't for Counter-Strike and Diablo II, it'd be basically dead.

Cable connections and such are still pretty damn expensive in Europe. Unlike the US..

Maybe that's what N will learn from MS and Sony: Dont deploy online servers for Europe!

The reason for this is because in large parts of Europe broadband still isn't widespread. Countries like the UK, Germany and the Netherlands all have many households with broadband, but there are many places where broadband isn't available or is just plain unaffordable.
