Topic: S-Video vs Component With a Non-480p TV

Hi Everyone,

    I'm getting married in the fall, and my fiancee and I will be using her TV in our new apartment.  Right now, I have my Gamecube hooked up with regular RCA connectors.  Her TV is a 27" Panasonic that's a standard TV, but has inputs for both S-Video and Component.  I am almost positive that it does NOT support 480p for Progressive Scan games and movies.

    I've heard that S-Video compared to a Component Video input doesn't really matter on a TV without 480p, but I was wondering what you all think I should get in order to hook up my Gamecube with better picture quality this fall.

    Some Questions:

    1. Should I go with S-Video or Component for best picture quality?
    2. Does upgrading to these types of video inputs really make a difference on a non 480p TV?
    3. Is it worth the money to upgrade?

Component from RCA will be a nice jump for you. I say go for the component.

I think you would have a hard time seeing the difference between the S-video and the Component cables.  Personnally I could not stand the thought that my Gamecube is not looking as good as possible, so I went with the component cables for the cube.  My DVD player is demoted to the S-video input, told my girlfriend that it was better.  

"Come on baby the 'S' stands for 'Super' it has got to be better"

But either way you go they are both a huge jump from RCA, and you will be able to see a difference.  I know this because I can switch between the two on my TV, and the difference is pretty obvious.

One last thing:

Get the component cable.

In any case, listen to Round Eye. Component may not look any better than S-video right now, but on the off-chance your TV does support progressive scan, or you get a better unit in the near future, you'll definately want component cables. There's a good chance they'll work with Nintendo's next system as well.
