Samsung's Tizen OS... A pipe-dream or really happening?
« on: October 12, 2013, 02:33:23 PM »
Is Samsung planning on abandoning Android once their Tizen devices become widely available? They'd surely incur the wrath of Google if they decide to compete directly against them with a rival OS.

Look at what happened with Amazon's Kindle Fire when they decided to fork Android for their own benefit; they were denied Google's services and apps.

You bring up the Kindle Fire, which did lose some support, but has also been hugely successful for Amazon. It could be argued that the Samsung Galaxy brand is stronger than the general Android brand in at least some ways, and you can't really blame Samsung for wanting to take greater control of their own destiny. I think this move would hurt Google/other Android device manufacturers more than it would hurt Samsung.

It's not a directly comparable situation. Tizen is its own thing, while Kindle is an Android fork, which doesn't meet the terms of Google Play licensing -- it wasn't like Google took away access; it never granted it in the first place, which is the same situation with many other tablet makers. Manufacturers make Windows phones and Android phones at the same time without problems. Tizen's been around for many years without being able to break into the market (under various other names), and Samsung's Android customizations are what people complain about most. Also, it's a lot more work to maintain your own operating system and services, so it remains to be seen whether it will ever go anywhere. I don't think Google's wrath will be a problem, it will be the lack of apps and such.

Well Google could deny giving Samsung access to the Android OS if they feel they are a big threat. Samsung supposedly wants to move away from Android, so why should Google keep supporting them?

Android is still open source by my understanding so Google really can't deny anyone.

They can't deny access to Android. If you're talking about Play Services, it would look bad on Google in a Microsoft-like way to block them. There's no point. Google doesn't have to go out of their way to "support" them even if they allow access to their services.

Tizen is a dead end for the simple fact that it has no user support what so ever. Samsung wants to own the platform and software but it won't ever happen fr obvious reasons.

If samsung were serious about ditching Android and google the would have bought webos and leveraged that around the time the Galaxy branding became the big thing

It will never happen. People don't buy Samsung phones just because they say Samsung on them - if they did, Windows Mobile would have been much more popular and Windows phone would as well. They buy Galaxy phones because they are high-end Android phones, made by Samsung.
