Need help to get best picture!!!!!
« on: June 08, 2003, 07:55:41 AM »
Ok, I'm about to get a big screen hdtv (most probably a 50 or 61" samsung with DLP so I wont have to worry about burn in), but I wanna find out what other things I would have to get in order to make my cube look best on the tv. I know I have to get the component cables first. What else for both video and audio (for a surround sound system) should I get?
Also, most games that support progressive scan run at 480 not 720 right?...Thanks

Well, you pretty much have everything set for high-quality visuals if you're getting a DLP HDTV and component video cables.  For audio, you'll have to get a surround sound reciever and speakers.  Make sure the reciever supports AT LEAST Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS and Pro Logic II.  You may want other things like 6.1, EX, THX certification, etc., but they aren't as vital.  Also make sure your speakers match and can handle the power the reciever will be sending them.  Unless you've got a lot of money to spend and want the best possible, you're probably best off buying an A/V reciever + speakers package.

Also note that many audio recievers also double as a hub for video signals (hence the V).  Only really high-end A/V recievers boast the Ability to handle a progressive scan signal.  If your TV already has enough component video inputs for your needs, don't bother with these reciever models unless you want the high-quality sound as well.

Yes, all DVDs and current console games run at 480p, not 720p, though we'll probably see more 720p next generation.  I would try to find a TV that handles both 480p and 720p well.  I'd imagine a DLP would be up to the task.

Perfect...thanks alot for your help.

One more thing though. Do you, or anyone that you know, have or know a specific type of speaker system that you consider to be really good? I went to best buy and liked the JLB (or JBL, whatever its called) 6 piece set. But it didn't come with a reciever. And like you mentioned before, I don't wanna get something that can't handle what my reciever lets out. Send as many suggestions as you want, I have NOOOOO porblem going to stores and listening to speakers for hours on end. (Hehehe) Thanks again for the help though.

Well, my family has a really nice speaker system up in Montana--you know, the kind so good you can only buy two speaker sets because those companies are greedy Bas--heh, I mean I can't really help you with a good decision there.

It is important for the speakers to match, but as for good speaker-receiver combinations you'd have to ask a real audiophile.  Honestly, though, speakers are probably 90-95% of what you hear (or don't).  Just buy a respectable receiver, and make sure your speakers' power ratings are at LEAST the same so you don't mess 'em up.  For example, if your receiver sends 100 watts to each rear speaker, make sure the rear speakers are rated at 100 as well.  Some would even recommend buying speakers 10 or 20 watts higher, just for safety.

Also, you may have to watch out for the Impedance (Ohm Rating) of speakers for compatibility issues.  I believe a receiver can properly handle speakers of equal or higher Ohm Rating, but don't quote me on that!  Any salesperson in the home audio department SHOULD be able to double-check compatibility between a speaker set and a receiver for you!  You probably aren't looking at 4 Ohm speakers anyway.

You might want to check out this website cheaphometheater.com.  They have quite a few receiver and speaker reviews there.  Including reviews on some speaker sets that you can order direct from the manufacturer, which saves you tons o' cash.  The HTD speakers sounded like they would be pretty good.

And if you are poor like me (although it does'nt sound like it) you can pick up some Logitech Z680's for like 450CAD.  They have a built in DPLII and DTS with optical inputs.  They sound pretty good to me, with loads of bass.

If anyone else has any other suggestios feel free to leave them, I'm open to your ideas until the day I actually go out and buy these things.

Tommorow or the day after I'm going out to check out tv's and sound systems again, so I'll come back with feedback and maybe some more questions. Thanks alot again.

I forgot to mention that I think www.cheaphometheater.com has a review of the JBL speakers that you liked.  If I remember correctly I think they liked them.

I think those are a different model of JBL's, but thanks anyways. But yeah they do give them a pretty good review, and in other sites people seem to like that brand too.

In an hour or two i'm gonna go check out all these things at some stores here in Miami so I'll bring back the info.

After much time at stores yesterday, I have decided on a Toshiba 65HdX82 (its a 65" hdtv). It looked very crisp and the sheer size is what got me hooked. The JBL speakers I had mentioned before were more than adequate for my price range so I think i'm gonna take those too. I've checked online and so far have only seen good reviews about the tv, so hopefully it'll turn out ok. If you guys have any comments feel free to post them. And thanks again Jsasky and TYP for all the info and help.
