Fighters GC vs Xbox
« on: June 04, 2003, 10:13:55 PM »
Hello, i am new to the board, so i'd just like to say Howdy. My little bro previously bought a GameCube, and I have purchased some games for it. SSB:M and Bloody Roar(im a hardcore fighter fan). But im now lookin for a more serious style game. I was lookin around and couldn't find any GC exclusive game that compares to Xbox's Tao Feng:fist of lotus. My question is are there any GC exclusives coming out that are simialr to TF on Xbox or any good fighters like that at the moment.

the only fighter that I know of coming soon is Soul Calibur II. It comes out Aug. 26. Fighting games that are out now are Capcom vs SNK 2 and Mortal Kombat: DA.

If you are a hardcore fighter fan, get a Dreamcast.  Seriously, it has so many fantastic fight games its not even funny.  2-d and 3-d.  Plus DC stuff is cheap, it has better graphics that a Ps2 (ps2's superiority was a lie), and there are some fantastic fight game controllers for the system.

As for GC, if you have SuperSmashBros and Bloody Roar you're off to a good start.  However make sure that you get the GameCube version of Soul Caliber 2.  I have now played all three and I can say this, Link is the best new character in the game!  Also the GC analog stick facilitates 3-d movement around your opponent much easier than a D-pad.

Capcom vs Snk2:EO is also a great 2-d for GameCube.  However you might want to look into one of those cheap psx/saturn controller converters for GC, as some people cant play 2-d without a D-Pad.

As for X-box, its only good 2-d fight games are titles that were out on DC two years earlier.  Plus they look exactly the same.  The only difference is that Capcom vs. Snk 2 has online play.  However I'm not sure if online cheating has hurt the game, like it has done elsewhere.  There are some Capcom Arcade Emus that run really well on X-box, but you'd have to mod your system, and thats something I wouldn't reccomend.

Aw man.  Everytime someone mentions the Dreamcast, it makes me cry.  *sobs*  An awesome console for fighting games.  I have several.

The GameCube suffers when it comes to fighting games. Just as the Nintendo 64 did.
And once again, it falls down to the design of the controller. They just don't design them for fighters. Look at what Capcom did to CvS2 in order to try and make it play on the GC controller better. THEY DESTROYED IT.

Go pick up a 2nd hand Dreamcast with MvC2 or Fighting Vipers 2.. Or one of the many other fine fighting games that wonderful box provided

if the GC controller sucks for fighters then in my opinion so does the PS2 and Xbox, the layout of the buttons on  all 3 systems is  so very similar if one straight sucked they all would.

I don't think the problem is the Gamecube controller, but rather the lazy developers who have been sticking to the same old control layout paradigms for years. Look at a game like Super Smash Bros. - granted it isn't a regular fighter, but Nintendo came up with a very unique and fresh control scheme for it so that it maps perfectly with the N64 controller. Then, when SSB:M came out, they reworked it for perfect play on their new controller. Capcom is natorious for taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to game design, but the problem with Capcom Vs. SNK 2 is that it was in fact broken and they didn't bother to try to fix it. Rather than reworking the control system from the ground up to maximize playability on the GC controller, they just lazily added the crapfest that is "GCism" and shipped it. The GC controller can stay; these cheap, quick ports are what need to go.

The only fighters I've played on GC are SSBM and the Soul Calibur 2 demo and both of them work beautifully with the GC controller. And if you really don't like the controller, they are making one that has the layout of the SNES controller, as well as a regular arcade controller for fighters. So the controller should not be a problem, if you've got the money to spend.
