Even though it's barely been a month since Lego City Undercover was released for the Wii U, Nintendo and TT Games are treating us to another trip to Lego City. Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins for the Nintendo 3DS seems to be just as ambitious as its bigger brother on Wii U.

The Chase Begins takes place two years prior to the events of its console counterpart. It tells the tale of Chase McCain getting his start as a rookie cop for the Lego City Police Department. Not much is known about how or why he decided to become a police officer, but judging from the official Nintendo Direct trailer, the deputy doesn't seem to welcome him with open arms, as the first assignment he sends McCain on is to restock the station’s supply of donuts.

Various screenshots and clips from the trailers suggest that there will be more varied missions including beating up thugs, arresting criminals, and running from rooftop to rooftop. The Chase Begins still seems to have just as vast of an open-world as the Wii U game, although with a lower draw-distance hidden by fog effects. Other than that and the fact that it seems to take far fewer bricks to construct Super Builds such as the Helipad, it doesn't appear to fundamentally differ from the Wii U title.

Nintendo has been rather quiet on releasing information about 3DS-specific features such as StreetPass or SpotPass functionality, but we'll have a full review of the game before it's released next Sunday on April 21.
