Nintendo Free Radio 14: Whatever Floats Your Hubba Tester
« on: April 07, 2013, 01:49:45 AM »
Donald hates Majora, Stephen hates editing, Austen hates pronouncing "Lara", and we all hate YOU*.
Download

Sit right back as we take you on a three hour tour through the world of video games and other foo-fa-rah. Stephen takes the lead on New Business as the whole group dove into Fire Emblem: Awakening to certain extents (mostly to get the DLC) and they talk about the good, bad and Lunatic+ of the unexpectedly hot-selling strategy RPG. After that, Stephen and Austen provide updates on their Ni no Kuni experience with that darn Mr. Drippy. Donald follows up with a very controversial "trip down the hill of quality" starting with Persona 4 (PS2 version), following up with Final Fantasy VIII (PS1 classic) and finishing with... MAJORA'S MASK? After resisting the urge to strangle his co-host, Austen discusses the two major early March releases - the colon-cancer causing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate and the Lara (or Laura) protection game Tomb Raider.

After a rambunctious Now Posted segment, the TV talk goes intergalactic with Stephen's update on Star Trek, ending Next Generation, starting the original series and hitting... the ANIMATED series? Donald brings back the mid-90s animation with The Critic, and Austen has the triple header of Wreck-It Ralph, Reboot and Tiger and Bunny.

The Feature promises to be controversial as at least two of the hosts take aim at annoying fanbases (guess who plays Switzerland and win the NFR No-Prize). What makes you want to slap members of a fanbase? Find out that, as well as the franchise that killed Sega, and if you want to take umbrage with any of the comments, send an email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com and we'll address them on a future show. Finally, the Mushrooms take aim at gaming media both good and bad, as well as a little medical drama.

Just a fair warning, guys, but I think you probably want to wait for a 2nd edition of this episode. There are some audio balancing issues with this episode that will probably be sorted out very quickly here.  Please just bear with us.  Thanks.

Hating is a waste of time.

Hating an amorphous group of people who post on internet is a waste quadrupled.

Unfortunately, that doesn't stop me from indulging in it from time to time

Star Trek Animated series was my first entry into entire franchise... Those wandering eyes, man...

Wow, TAS as your first entry? Sorry to hear that. TAS sucks, and this is coming from a big Trek fan. I admit that im not a fan of TOS era (though some of the TOS movies are good), but TAS was just plain bad. The only comforting thing is that the animated show is not considered canon.

Actually, TAS is Canon and Isn't Canon.  Officially it should be canon but fandom says its not.  Theirs a whole weird deal with that.

I liked TAS.  I think I say so in the episode.  Its like the original series with a lot less filler.

Um, it's not canon. Paramount has directly said that. And in a official 1999 Star Trek encyclopedia written by Michael and Denis Okuda (who created the glass control panels used since Star Trek IV) said:

'In a related vein, this work (i.e. book) adheres to Paramount studio policy that regards the animated Star Trek series as not being part of the "official" Star Trek universe, even though we count ourselves among that show's fans. Of course, the final decision as to the "authenticity" of the animated episodes, as with all elements of the show, must clearly be the choice of each individual reader."

Stuff from TAS is not canon until it gets introduced in one of the live action movies or shows (like Kirk's middle name being called Tiberius in TAS, but was not considered canon until Star Trek VI). If you want to talk about a much trickier canon issue, you can look at Star Trek V. As a live action movie, it's supposed to be canon. However, the producers for the franchise unofficially pretend its not, intentionally ignoring stuff from the movie and even contradicting it.

Never officially. And even if it was, it was decided decades ago (apparently by Gene Roddenberry himself) that it would not be canon.

And back then there wasnt really a canon anyways, they were doing whatever the hell they wanted and not thinking about whether stuff was contradicted or not. I'm glad its not canon, because you have terrible ideas like Spock meeting his younger self, the TOS crew becoming fish creatures, etc.

This makes be wish ENT had been given a 5th season, the showrunner says we would have seen the first canonical appearance of the Kzinti (the cat-like race from TAS).

Gene Roddenberry said it wasn't Canon and then it was determined that in this case he had signed a contract that it would be.  Then it is how it is.

For the record, Next Generation did the whole fish people thing and seriously Spock meeting his younger self is in the new Continuity branch.

Spock didnt meet his younger self in the alternate timeline, he met a alternate version of himself (similar to the Mirror Universe idea). And I was referring specifically to the TAS episode when Kirk and Spock grew gills. And TAS also used actual magic.

Alright the magic thing I'll give you.  But the fish thing did happen in ST:TNG as well with Deanna Troi in the De-Evolution episode.

Spock still met his younger self alternative timeline or not.

Alright, now we know that if we want to get a relatively large response on any given RFN episode:

Step 1: Talk about Community, Big Bang Theory, or obscure Star Trek

Step 2: ................

Step 3: PROFIT!  :P:

I've never seen the animated Star Trek series, personally. I have very little interest in the original Star Trek series and most of its movies, which played some part in me not really liking the reboot film.  Interesting to see it inspire some talk here, though.  :D

BTW, it's becoming almost tradition to mention me on the podcast. LOL. Even if it's not in a positive light, lol

Thanks for your patience, everyone.  Here's a new Download Link featuring a version of this episode with rebalanced audio and some additional tweaks here and there. We had issues getting podbean to recognize the new file: Download

As for the upcoming Episode 15, I'm going to try to get that out before the end of the weekend, but it's proving to be quite the challenge.
