GCN advertisements - NOA gets it right
« on: May 31, 2003, 12:50:04 PM »
Wow, I'm impressed with NOA's new line of GCN ads, the ones with the geeky-looking cashier in the game store.
And, they are actually...funny!
I just saw the one yesterday about the get a free copy of Zelda with a GCN. I hot chick walks up and buys a GCN, and he hands her a copy of Zelda sneakily, saying, "Here, take it. Shhhh *wink*"
Of course it won't sound very funny how I say it, but this and the other new ads are far better than that other crap I've been seeing for the past few years. Sure, some were good, like the super extensive and expensive Ocarina of Time marketing (posters and ads everywhere, and those "have ye what it takes ads" were actually good). If only they marketed Metroid Prime the same way as Ocarina of Time...

Anyway, I heard NOA is getting a new advertising agent; I'm not sure if these new ads (they aren't actually new, but now they are taking off as a whole line of ads, unline the single, rare one back when the promotion took off) are the work of the new agency, but if they are, then hopefully it's a sign of more good things on the way.

And I also like the fact that NOA is actually paying for some good ad times now... I'm seeing these ads everywhere from prime time to midnight to mornings.

I have yet to see one and I watch TV constantly.  Where are they airing and are they downloadable anywhere?

Most of the Nintendo ads I've seen are pretty good.  Compared to the other consoles, anyway.  There were some dumb ones I heard about but didn't see, but there were enough good ones to make up for it.  That "180 games: What a rush" commercial was awesome.  But these new ones sound good, too.

yeah, i just saw that one yesterday. I still laugh at it everytime i see it. Oh and its the demo disc that he hands to her, not wind waker. Still, they are getting better. Now all they need to do is transfer these new advertising ideas to games. All the funny good one's are just for the GCN bundle, not for actual games. TYhey need to do some commercials like Sony did for legend of the Dragoon, where the guy is all tough and stuff and gets his head cut off, saying "ow that hurt". Well you had to see it to understand it but it was funny non the less.

There must be two versions of the commercial, because I'm absolutely sure he handed her Zelda. It was a gold box AND the announcer said get Zelda: Wind Waker or one of these other great games free. He didn't mention the demo disc at all. So maybe there are too versions of the ad?

Plus, isn't the demo disc bundled inside a GCN box? or do they hand it too you at the register?

Nintendo hasn't gotten it right yet cuz the games still aren't being adequately advertised.  But the narrator's voice in the cashier commercials was a good choice to use, though.  If Nintendo was willing to pay $10,000 for a 5 minute recording visit, they could aquire the services of Frank Laffontane (sp?).

Well, ads for a system do little but slightly color public perception.  I mean, if you don't know about all three game systems, a commercial's not going to help you.  Basically, the system with the best commercial is perceived as "cool" by casual gamers; it does little to encourage running out to the store and buying.

Ads for games, though, are an entirely different story.  Most gamers don't read gaming websites or literature.  Most people do not know Eternal Darkness ever existed, much less that it was an amazing game.  A lot of people think Mario Sunshine was a crappy children's game because of the commercial.  Commercials for games are what count in the end.

No, they're what count in the beginning.  Tell me one game commercial from ten years ago.  Then tell me ten good games.  I think you'll have an easier time with the second one.

They do matter, though.  I never saw the Super Mario Sunshine commercial, and while I doubt that was the source for that opinion about it, it was certainly a factor.

I remember the first Zelda Commerical when it first came out. Some guy in tights runing around a carboard maze yelling Zelda.. And it showed some gameplay. (But then again that more like 20 years ago. )

And another one about 10 years ago with the guy in an Italian Restaurant eating pasta. And they show game shots of Super Mario Land 2: Yoshi's Island. Until at the end of the commercail were they make like the guy explodes. I also remember the conterversary around that commercail.

I also remember when the first SNES commercial showed. With game play of Super Mario Land, and they showed Mario going through one of the many key warps in the game. And showed the flying with the capes and feathers. And then they showed the SNES. I remember how surprised I was that another Nintendo System was coming out and how hard it would be to get my mom to get since she just replaced my NES a few months before because my little brother spilled Soda on it. (My first SNES also suffered the same fate.)

That's three from a person who doesn't watch TV all that much.

you guys are forgetting one of the classics!

remember the funtastic color line of N64's? it started off with those different colored medievil armys going at eachother until it shifts to that guy who is shopping with his grilfriend and when she shows him the two bikini's to choose from it flashes back to those medievil guys wearing the bikinis and towards the end of the commercial the big fat guy in the bikini is picking a wedgie. i loved that commercial.

i also remember the one for Mario golf where the kid made it seem like he was masturbating making all those "moans" until it shows him holding the controller and his parents were knocking on the door wondering what was going on.

i totally forgot about that Mario World 2 commercial with the guy exploding. Nintendo must have had monty pythons the meaning of life on the brain when making that commercial.
Save the best for last!

I've seen the commercial with the geeky-looking cashier (let's call him "Gregg"), where he's scanning a copy of Zelda, it rings up as $0, then he scans his eyes by mistake, and his brain rings up as $0.
If anything, it gets the attention of non-gamers. My boss is a 40 something year old mom, she hasn't played video games since Pong and she absolutely loves those commericals starring "Gregg".

The bikini N64 one was awesome!!!  Who also remember the original Super Smash Bros. commercials, where all the characters are walking down the park holding hands. Then, all of a sudden, they begin the bash eachother. The music was perfect too...

Yup, I've see the one with "Gregg" and its ok. Nothing that'll knock the socks off a casual gamer, just keep them informed.

I think the main focus here should be "actually showing gameplay" of the game. Even with the Metroid commerical, they had like 5 seconds of gameplay throughout the whole thing. I don't even want to get started with Mario sunshine.

But they should first start by actually showing commericials:

Steps to victory:

1) Show commericials
2) Don't show dumb commercials
3) Show commercials with info and gameplay footage.

Which reminds me.
I went to see Phone Booth on Friday, and guess what I saw?

The Wind Waker ad in the trailers! Hooray! That was the first Nintendo ad I have ever seen at the movies. Trailers for games like Zelda just seem more epic on a big screen with pounding sound.

I didn't see the Metroid Prime trailer in cinemas. (I have seen it online.) But last year, I saw the Wind Waker trailer in a cinema!!! Yes, they had the little girl trailer last year. The difference between this and the more recent TV spot is that the TV ad is shorter and has updated gameplay footage.

Actually, they did pull the "Clean is better" ads about a week after they started showing them, and started airing ads that were completely gameplay footage of Mario running around Delphino Island, while a voice-over talked about Mario's vacation. But yeah, I get what you're saying. All they need to do for F-Zero is show 30 seconds of racing and explosions.

They have had the Wind Waker trailer in theaters for months now...I didn't they STILL had it...

They had the Metroid Prime trailer before Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for crying out loud. How could you miss it?
BTW, the Metroid trailer was only shown before PG-13 and R movies, maybe that's why you missed it... *shrug*
