Virtual Console dead? Something new to rise from the ashes?

This is obviously a very tenuous assumption to make. Perhaps Nintendo is just moving things around on their website. Or updates will be so few and far between that it's not worth having a whole separate section on their website for them. Or they are killing the Virtual Console but they'll call it something else when they merge their two eShops into one. Or maybe they're just done releasing old games digitally. WHO KNOWS MAN.

The 3DS VC is still (relatively) alive and kicking, so I highly doubt they're killing the service.

The entire Virtual Console service, regardless of what console, needs a massive stimulus package of more games.

If I have learned anything from the people in power is that Virtual Console doesn't need a stimulus but a cutting of its debt and refunds to its highest game buyers.  These means that older games will need to go away.

The upcoming *Wii* Virtual Console page has been removed from the Japanese site. Because the one for Wii U is now being made... This is a good sign.
Just be patient until the Wii U Virtual Console arrives. Good things come to them who wait.

This is for Japan, whose Virtual Console on Wii has like 200 more games on it than ours. At current release rates, Nintendo probably has enough games to keep supplying North America for the next two and a half decades.

Keep in mind how long it took for the 3DS eshop to really get going... or exist... at all :P Nintendo doesn't rush into things, we wait longer, but we aren't bombarded with patches every ten minutes either. Hopefully what they're working on is getting their emulators running on the wii u so we don't have to play virtual console in wii mode. Is that an emulator within and emulator? emuception.... O_O

The games for WiiU will be enhanced! Awesome. If you re-buy a game transferred from the Wii it will cost $1 - $1.50.

Meanwhile, Japan Virtual Console is getting Mother 2 in March. But here USA, enjoy Baloon Fight.

EDIT: NES 30th Anniversary games for 30 cents.

Super Metroid for 30 cents is unquestionably the greatest bargain ever.

This says 6.4 MB: http://www.wiiwarewave.com/t3136-balloon-fight-wii-u-vc-review  , which seems much closer to what you would expect for a NES game on the service.

These are Wii Virtual Console games.
Here you go:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33105

It's to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the NES/Famicom in Japan. So Wii U owners will get a different VC game for $0.30 each month. The North American/PAL list is similar to the Japanese list, except Japan will get Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem in February and EarthBound in March. This is noteworthy because this is the first time Japan is actually getting EB, despite the Japanese copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl having a demo of it in the VC section).

sigh I knew it was too good to be true, I originally started to rant about JPN getting Mother 2 (aka Earthbound) but not the US, then someone posted before I submit mine so I read the new post and they referred to it as Earthbound, so I was hopeful.. damn

Wonder why it's so much larger on the Wii U, are the extra features really that bloated?

I would not be surprised if the reason we're not getting Earthbound in this promotion is Nintendo wanting the Westerners desperate to play the game to have to pay full price instead of just 30 cents.

For the record, I would GLADLY pay import pricing ($9) for a VC release. Yes, that's over MSRP. I lost my copy of Earthbound in 199-friggin-6 and want to buy it legally.

What if Nintendo releases it only on the Wii U's VC, so that existing Wii owners will have to buy the Wii U if they want to legally be able to play it (without playing the original SNES cartridge)?
