Having had a quick search on the forums I was unable to find a 'rate the last movie you've seen' or 'new movies/tv shows we should keep an eye out for!' equivalent for music (please correct me if I'm wrong). Although a huge fan of music I rarely actually do any research or make any concerted effort to remain up to date; much of my taste in music is therefore shaped by live gigs, recommendations and pure happenstance. So let's all throw something in and take something away.

Nathaniel Rateliff - A great lyricist with a pair of pipes that would make Robert Plant envious. When I first saw this guy play in a bar in Belfast it was a revelation. I had no idea who he was (the extent of my knowledge was that he was from Missouri and that he played acoustic guitar), but by the end of that first gig I was hooked. If you like the autumnal nature of Nick Drake but also enjoy someone who can really scream a song then you might want to check him out.

The Low Anthem - Now that I look back, it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. At the same gig that I was introduced to Rateliff I was also introduced to the fantastic Low Anthem. That was back in 2010 and I've now seen them three times. They bring an etherealness to their live performances that is simply hypnotic. They're a must for any fan of folk.

The Leisure Society - I would have called my self a moderate a fan of this band back when their album 'The Sleeper' was released in 2009, but their latest album 'Into the Murky Waters' was without a doubt my album of 2011. It's simply incredible. As an album it demonstrates a deftness and subtlety that most indie bands simply can't grasp.

Music threads always tend to die out around here, its a shame actually.

I'll back-up recommendations for the Pixies, Purity Ring and of course Weird Al. I'll throw my hat into the ring by suggesting:

Music recommendations are tough when you don't know what other people enjoy, or why.

That being said, here are my musical mainstays:

Suggested Albums: "Funeral", "Neon Bible" (I haven't listened to any of their albums since, cant suggest beyond those two because of this)

As a side note, I hate how "Indie" has been used as a genre of music. There is such a diverse range of sounds and styles that are thrown into that description that it completely loses its meaning.

Vivaldi, The Four Seasons, as played by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert (its gotta be played fast or no go)
Beethoven's 7th (I have Herbert Von Karajan with the Berliner Philharmonic but just about any version will do)
Jethro Tull, Thick as a Brick and Songs From The Wood
Genesis, Selling England by The Pound
Beatles: Sgt Peppers and Rubber Soul
Yes, Fragile, Close to the Edge and, for a real mindfuck, Relayer
Spice Girls, Spice (or whatever that first album of theirs was called
Any of several John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith film scores

Been listening to a lot of Trampled by Turtles recently. I saw them play a few weeks ago and thought they were incredible.

Although I've considered myself a huge fan of The Kinks for many years, today was the first time I had actually sat down and gave any considerable attention to 'Preservation Act 2'. While it's certainly not the best Kinks album (which, for the record is, Muswell Hillbillies) it was incredibly varied and enthusiastic. More importantly it was immensely enjoyable.

Something about The Kinks' quintessential Britishness just brings a smile to my face (and that's hard for me to say as an Irishman

: ). Goddamn it I love the Kinks!

I've recently went back and listened to the Cure's first album after a few of its tracks came up back to back (or in close enough succession) while I had my music player on random, and mannnnn do I wish they had more of these albums before their sound developed further!

Great guitar rock in this album, and while I can cop out and post a more well known song that might have more appeal to first time listeners.. **** it! Please enjoy this underrated number by one of my all-time favorite bands:

Having watched the documentary 'Searching for Sugar Man' I'm now completely obsessed with Jesus 'Sixto' Rodriguez. It does him little justice to compare him to other artists (he truely does have a sound that is all his own), but his songs do have elements which remind me of some of my favourite artists. His voice often reminds me of Nick Drake's singing style, the construction of his riffs and the layering of orchestral instrumentation remind me of Neil Diamond, and the social commentary in his lyrics is up there with Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

I highly recommend watching the documentary, but I think the music of the man himself is what is going to stick with for the long term.

Here is one of my favourites.
