Which laptop would you recommend?
« on: November 21, 2012, 11:27:46 PM »
I currently have a Samsung QX-411 laptop that I bought last year. If I decide to upgrade in the near future, I might go with a different brand. I like my Samsung, but it's a bit bulky; and for the price I paid ($800) the build quality isn't as good as I hoped.

As far as build quality and features, I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

- Lenovo
- Samsung
- ASUS

Which of those is the best quality (hardware)?

ASUS has the lowest failure rates in laptops.

I've heard nothing but praise for ASUS, but I love the design of Lenovo laptops. From what I've seen while at Best Buy, they are very well built and feel solid.

My Samsung is nice, but it sometimes feels really sluggish (I use Windows 7), and it has a cheap plastic bottom...

I love my Asus. Goos specs for a cheap price. I'm  able to use it for school while also making it my media center on the go. Runs games pretty well too, so no complaints  from me.

I know very little about technology but I've had a Samsung laptop for the last two years and it does the job. I know that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement but I only need something very basic. I guess it depends on what you need for.

Just got the laptop that I linked to a few weeks ago. Loving it. Wasn't sure how I was going to like Windows 8, but after installing it on an old laptop last night (I get all Windows OS for free, legitimately), it's quickly grown on me.

Touchscreen  capability?

I have an iPod Touch for that. It's a nice feature, but not essential (unless I buy a Windows 8 laptop).

No touch screen, I don't see the necessity for a PC. Also there are no decent touch screen laptops that I could get for the same price unless I wanted to go way down in specs. It does basically have a MacBook style touchpad though, so it's better than most laptop touchpads.

Bummer, and you're right about the specs thing. I did see a decent ultrabook that would spin around into tablet mode, which was pretty nifty.

The Lenovo Yoga is pretty cool, but if you want a decent one it's still $1400 and you still get a weak ass Intel HD 4000. Mine has a 1GB nVidia 640GT.

I can't justify Lenovo's because a lot of their stuff is surprisingly cheap looking and feeling.

I need to see a Yoga before i write it off as the same.

It actually feels pretty sturdy. It's weird though because the palm rest/keyboard area is made of fake leather, I assume so it doesn't get all scratched up when in tablet mode. It's not very soft though.

Bump since I am thinking of getting a new laptop. It wouldn't really be for gaming since I don't do much PC gaming. But it would be nice to have the option. Ideally I would like a touchscreen. I don't want to buy another one for at least 3-4 years, so some future-proofing (RAM, HDD size, etc.) would be very helpful. Price-range would ideally be around $500 or less. Any recommendations?

Just for the next 3 or 4 years, I don't need it to be state of the art for 6 years. My current laptop is about 3 years old and it more than does the trick for what I need, but I would maybe like a bit better laptop now.

A decent touchscreen laptop will be more than that, or at the very least $500. Stay away from Toshiba and HP (my opinion), Samsung, ASUS and Lenovo would probably be my top 3 brands.

My current laptop is a Samsung, it was an Office Max assurance replacement for my Toshiba that died and they could never get it fixed properly, so I second the stay away from Toshiba. I am in the market myself for a newer laptop, something with a fast as hell cpu and a decent graphics card. My Toshiba had a Blu Ray built in but since nothing I have looked at since does I ended up just getting an external writer anyways. HP has always been crap.

I say stick with Samsung... But that's just me. I have a series 7 (not touch screen) with 3rd gen i7, 1TB drive, 8GB RAM, and GeForce 640M (I believe). You have to have it plugged in the wall to use the GeForce instead of the Intel built-in graphics but it's pretty decent for gaming.

Linked to it back in November (look up)...I don't think it's available anymore, there's a newer version with touch screen and better LCD instead...which I want now.
