Things can be both pointless and entertaining. Many, many things fit that description. And I wasn't really talking about you, more about people who complain about smites and act like they're a serious thing.

Pointless and entertaining perhaps, but there is something to be said for removing the + and - system altogether. It doesn't exactly play to NWR's strength, which I feel is the site's ability to offer a forum for grown-up discussion of video games. I mean, I guess it's funny to people under the age of 16 but it's not terribly conducive to discussion.

It's also not un-conducive to discussion unless you take it seriously, which is stupid to do.

Every good idea ever implemented on this forum was pretty much stolen from SA. There's a lot of catching up to do now that I haven't been an admin for years.

I'd like to think people with the mental maturity of someone over 16 wouldn't get their knickers in a knot about something so trivial.

You say that like it's in conflict with the sentence you quoted. I think it's dumb on both sides. It's dumb to get a kick out of it and it's dumb to take it seriously. That's why I think it should be removed as a system. Clearly I'm in the minority though.

A properly working Karma system would forgo the negative aspects altogether. Instead you would simply have a "Like" or a "Report" button. Furthermore, the "Likes" would be on a per post basis, and displayed as such. You would only ever be able to "Like" any given post once. It actually wouldn't even hurt to show the users that "Liked" an individual post at that point, since the negative parallels wouldn't exist.

That said, I would like to sick the Forum Hitman upon TJ Spyke. He can never have enough minuses. :P

I think Morari is responsible for at least half the smites I have. I found it funny when I stopped posting for about 3 weeks and my smite count still went up by like 20.

I find it funny that anyone honestly cares about their smite count. The way I see it, if you're dumb enough to be upset by that, you deserve to be upset by it.

I don't care, I find it funny that it seems like some others do. I know Morari does, as he smites me all the time for no reason, and whines whenever he thinks I smite him.

You are in the minority, because the Majority of us don't give a **** either way.

The Majority of us only even notice it when someone starts complaining about it. To which we then will have fun at their expense.

They mean nothing. If they did, then Mega's number wouldn't be fixed, my negatives would be added to my positives :) :P some posters would have a much higher positive and certain other posters wouldn't have a positive score at all (you know who you are, don't look at me like that :D).

and with that being said, I now welcome the aftermath upon my score.

I endorse it mostly because people hate it.

Even though it is trivial.

But I won't lie, I smile when I get an applaud for a quip or well thought out post.

Considering I get smited pretty much regardless of what I say in a given post, that shouldn't take too long.  :-\

I think it says a lot about the applause/smite system that the most positive response I've seen to it on this site is sheer apathy, and the only reason it remains is because the establishment doesn't want to go through the hassle of removing it.  I've said my piece on it in the past, though, so you all go ahead and whine about it without me.

The main reason I'm against getting rid of it is that generally the only people who are really against it are the people who get smited a lot, and most (not all, mind you) of those people deserve the smites they get.

Maybe do a poll or something to see what people think about the system and what should be done?

I am indifferent to the the system to be honest. It just isn't implemented well on the forums. If the system was suppose to be a way to change posting habits of people then it hasn't done that well because of how it is implemented on the forums.Sure you can smite people but if they don't know what post got people upset then its as most people are saying pointless to have it. At this point it is just a way to cause discord on the forums.
