UPDATE: Square Enix officially announced the iOS game which is set to release on iPhone and iPad on August 27. The game dubbed The World Ends with You: Solo Remix is a new version of the original DS game.

Square Enix is set to release a new version of The World Ends With You on iOS later this year. 

The news comes from the listing of a new TWEWY soundtrack on Square Enix’s e-Shop, which included text mentioning the existence of a version of the game on the iOS platform before it was later removed. The original text also mentioned the inclusion of new music for the iOS version. 

Square Enix has not officially announced an iOS version of the game, nor has it confirmed or denied the existence of a Nintendo 3DS version. 

Before the leak, Square Enix stated that its TWEWY announcement would be revealed on August 27 at midnight in Japan, which is August 26, 11 a.m. ET in North America.

You're joking right? First, Nintendo has nothing to do with this. Second, iOS is mobile gaming. As much as I hate to admit it, it's kind of a big(ger) deal nowadays. Mobile gaming, since you didn't know Nintendo doesn't publish TWEWY or what iOS is, is gaming on a cell phone. Cell phones are these things you talk or text people on. Do I need to define what people are or are you good?

I'm so freaking angry. Why create a countdown site for a port to iOS? I would understand if it was a remake on Wii U or 3DS, but to iOS? This means no change in graphics, and maybe even a dumbing down of the gameplay now that there isn't two screens.


I'm so pissed. I wanted a sequel.

Not that I know of.  Even Squeenix diehards would be averse to that price.  I think $30 would be the highest price software they have put on iOS.

This will probably be $17 for the completely unplayable (iPhone) version and $20 for the playable (iPad) version, because SquareEnix... well, let's just say that I'm going to get bleeped repeatedly tonight during a podcast recording.

I don't think Final Fantasy Dimensions looks too good but at the same time, I don't find a $4-7$ price per episode all that egregious. This kind of price is the lesser evil next to ads or being constantly bugged to buy in-game stuff or pester your friends into playing the game. At least when you pay up front for your game, you are usually left alone to enjoy your game properly.

That said, I'm not planning to buy Dimensions or in fact to play any more iOS game ever.

Technically speaking, iOS is the operating system for Apple devices (iPod, iPad, iPhone). "Mobile gaming" is a much broader term than encompasses Android, iOS, Blackberry, and Windows Phone (as if anyone plays games on a Blackberry).

You're right about Blackberry, that's pretty much dead. Android is still the second most popular smartphone OS in the world, and Windows Phone is catching up.

Microsoft is heavily invested in the whole "Metro" interface, and they are going to market Windows 8 (PC) and Windows Phone like crazy this fall. If MS plays their cards right, they might overtake Android. That's a big IF.

In terms of overall OS popularity that's true, but in terms of smartphone gaming iOS blows the others out of the water. Basically every game is available on iOS, and based on everything I've seen the difference in sales is massive.

It's not Metro anymore, so that is wrong. And technically Android is #1 in terms of phone sales, though I would bet iOS makes more money. Windows Phone won't likely become #1. Right now, it is even behind BlackBerry. In Q2 of this year, Windows Phone only had a 3.5% marketshare. Android was a whopping 68.1% (though experts think it's because people are waiting for iPhone 5), iOS was 16.9%, BlackBerry 4.8%, Symbian at 4.4%, Linux at 2.3%. So even with a big push, do you really see Windows Phone getting to #1 or even #2 when it is in 5th place right now? Hell, even Symbian has a bigger marketshare.

I'm still unsure of how the top screen portion of the game will play on iOS. The dual screen part really only works on the iPad. I guess they'd have to make them separate?

For now. 5 years ago Blackberry was on top. 5 years from now it will be someone else, but you are right... at this moment in time iOS dominates. Too bad for Apple that isn't going to last.

There was a time long long ago when Apple was synonymous with Desktop computers and they dominated, but then Microsoft took that away from them like a bully taking lunch money from a nerd. Microsoft probably didn't give a **** about the mobile market until they've seen how successful Apple has been with it. So now Microsoft is saying to Apple "Nice market you got there. I'll just take that from you, just like I took the Desktop market from you years ago".

And then Microsoft snatches it away like the bully that it is, and leaves Apple broken and humiliated. Like it or not, Windows 8 is coming, and it will be the death knell for iOS.

You're crazy if you think Microsoft's winning this fight. They may get a decent chunk, but Apple and Google are the major players, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Microsoft's not beating Apple this time.
