Fathers Day is coming up, and I'm thinking about getting my dad a DVD player since some of his favorite shows are out or coming out on DVD (Cheers, All In The Family, etc.).  I was hoping to get some good suggestions from the PGC forum folk.  I would like to keep it under..maybe $100 or so.  Thanks in advance.
Where's the GOOD remakes/compilations!?  Shining Force, Landstalker, Adventures of Lolo!?

Personally, I would just go with a cheaper one, unless you have some good hardware to hook it up to that supports all the nice stuff that DVD players have to offer.  I don't really know that much about standalone DVD players though, as I use a DVD-ROM for my DVD viewing purposes.

Eh, I bought an ultra cheap DVD player not that long ago from Big W. Cost a mere $118 AUS (About... $80 US? *Shugs shoulders*)

Sure, it has a stupid brand name (Some crap starting with X) and it doesn't look too crash hot. But it performs way better than my PS2, it can run DVD/VCD/MP3/JPEG/KODAK/WHATEVER

Works GREAT. Plus it can read mere MPEG's, which I find great.

Just go browse around your local Big W, Target or Wal-Mart. Find any old cheap one =)

I bought a Samsung DVD player for 99$ 2 years ago , and its a really solid player.  You could probably get it for around 60-70 by now.  I got it at Best Buy, by the way.  Or , you could get the Apex, which is really cheap.  My friend has 2 of them, and he really likes them.  But if you want a home theatre type setup, i'd recommend something from Sony or JVC.

I really can't tell the difference in quality between resolutions or DVD players or whatever, they all seem the same to me.  Unless you're really into a home theater or something, a fairly cheap DVD player would be fine, I think.

Bah, Why do I have to be such a home theatre whore? Seriously, go for a name you know. Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Philips (bleh forget philips), any of those are pretty good. Also study the warrantee policies, as many of the cheaper players tend to give very short warantees. Good shopping.

I'm looking to buy my first DVD player and decided to resurrect this thread instead of making a new one. My main question is, are there any brands I should stay away from? I've been reading reviews of different brands at amazon.com, and it seems that just about every brand has a few bad reviews saying the players stop working within like 6 months. Is this something that's actually that common?

Right now I've been considering this Samsung  and this Magnavox. Both have similar features although the Magnavox does seem to offer a little more and is cheaper. Anyone have any suggestions?

DVD players are more like VHS these days -- they're really not all that much different from one another. Any reputable brand name product will serve you well. Some differentiate themselves a bit with MP3 or WMV playback and things like that. Otherwise you're looking at the same basic product, they just look different.

What I do these days is pay attention to the remote they come with. Some DVD players come with really cheesy looking remotes. Your mileage may vary, but I have low tolerance for the small blocky ones built for small size rather than an elegant interface.
"wow."

I personally like Toshiba, but it's basically down to personal taste I guess...

as bigjim pointed out, most dvd players are pretty decent these days.  so as long it's made by a company you recognize, it should be fine.  just be sure you find one with a remote that you like.  there's nothing worse than being suck with a crappy remote.  personally, i like sony.  not counting the ps2, all of sony's products work great.

also, people need to stop resurrecting old forums.  when i saw grey ninja replied i got all excited for a second, only to realize that he replied back in may 2003.  this is like the third time it's happened to me since he left.  (i get easily excited.)

Mr. Fate go with the Apex.  It really comes down to you buying something under $100 right?  $50 for the apex and the other $50 for the upcoming Custom Robo game.  Hallelujah brother!

Well, excuse me. Most people (mods) tend to get pissed off if you create repeat threads.

I'm a big fan of Panasonic's merchandise but if you've made up your mind, it's not that big of a deal.

i agree--four twin snakes threads is a bit much.  but starting a new thread when an official thread i stickied at the top of the page is a bit different than resurrecting a ten month old thread.

don't take my comments personally.  i just like to complain.

You don't have to pay a lot to get a lot of gadgets.  My DVD cots less then $90 (aus) and it supports DTS, kodak photo etc. It's only one of the cheap brands but it does the job for me.
