How do I remove DRM from iTunes videos?
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:00:42 PM »
I have three movies I bought from iTunes that I want to put on my PS3 but it had DRM. Does anyone know of a way to remove the DRM? I've tried several converters but most of them were scams.

Not the answer you're looking for, but you could try streaming it to the PS3 with PS3 Media Server. It kicks ass.

Thank you for that completely amazing nugget of wisdom Morari. I'm glad you took three seconds of your time to type that for me. I really aprreciate it.

Anyway, how would I go about streaming it? I did some research and when it comes to Media Streaming, the file format needs to be something the PS3 could play off the HDD. I haven't verified this myself, so how would I go about streaming it?

I don't think the PS3 necessarily needs to be able to play it, PS3 Media Server transcodes the video (otherwise it would be pointless, since Windows Vista and 7 can stream to the PS3 already) so it can be played back on the PS3. You just launch the program, choose the folder with your media (I think it can import iTunes libraries too), then look for it to show up in the video section on the PS3 XMB.

I don't know if these will do what you want them to, but here are handful of Video transcoding programs I use or have used:

http://handbrake.fr/
http://www.mediacoderhq.com/
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Hopefully one or more of these will be able to help you out. They are all free too, btw.

Sadly, The PS3 Media Server says that the iTunes bought files are "corrupted", so that's out. And those file converter programs that Chozo Ghost linked don't convert DRM files. :(

That doesn't work either. Damn, Apple's DRM is hard to crack. Anyone else have any ideas? I tried a few more but all it did was give me viruses.

I think it's time for a little bit of "fair use." You bought the ****, so download another copy from somewhere else, without garbage DRM.

Alright, I guess that's my only choice.

And hey, thanks for the PS3 Media Server. It does kick ass.

If you have an Android phone you can install UPNPlay (from the Market) and stream to your phone from PS3 Media Server too...glad to help.

I use Airplayit for my iPod Touch but I like the PS3 Media Server better. It's a pretty awesome piece of software.

In the future maybe you might want to do your movie purchases on DVD because once you have the DVD you can do the transcoding yourself to any format you like (using those programs I linked) and then put the digital files on your PS3 and any other device you want.

As per what Brandogg said, I don't think it would count as piracy if you borrowed a DVD of these movies from a friend or from your local library or whatever and made a digital copy of them. You already bought it so fair use should apply.

Is it easy to rip the Blu-Ray versions or will I need a computer that has a Blu-Ray drive?

No. iTunes downloaded movies still have DRM. They will only stream to an Apple TV.
alternately, you could remove itunes drm or get them on an iPod and then hook up the iPod to the TV. but that's not as convenient.

Why would you even bother with iTunes? Hulu, youtube or some other video sites is the way to go these days.

I know it's hip to watch things online these days, but I don't have a fast internet speed. Streaming is not what I want to do.

I always use the program to strip DRM protection from my iTunes movie purchases or rentals. It works pretty well for me ...

You do need a BD Rom drive to rip the BDs on your PC or Mac.  A dvd rom or RW drive cannot read a bluray disc so there's no way to rip it that way.  I know there are some BD drives that are cheaper these days.  You may want to search around for one.

I used a program called Requiem to remove DRM from my iTunes videos, it took seconds to remove DRM from a 2 hour, 720p documentary.
