It's not about "entitlement;" it's about being an artist and wanting to create. You have ideas that you want to get out. The industry experience you're living isn't giving you that, so you make your own studio, make small smartphone games, raise funds, then make the game you've always wanted.

Ok, but what about an animator who hates working on a certain cartoon? Do you think he'd  quit Pixar/Dreamworks/Disney/Warner Bros. and form his own animation studio?

What about a person working at an auto factory who has an idea for a new car? Would he quit the factory and form his own auto company?

If everyone decided to quit their daily job in order to create their dream product, our society wouldn't get anywhere. We'd have an oversaturation of people with big dreams, but in real life not everyone gets that big chance. Ever heard of the term "struggling artist"?

Don Bluth. He worked on big Disney animated movies like Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too and The Rescuers. Then he left Disney and formed his own rival studio. He then made the arcade game Dragon's Lair, and the movies The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, Anastasia, All Dogs Go to Heaven

So the indie scene isn't just associated with game studios then. And I knew about the Don Bluth story, but that was decades ago.

I also know about John Kricfalusci and various other animators who worked for bigger studios during the 1980's. They all went off on their own to form their own studios, and many were quite successful.

Other than that, I can't think of anything more recent.

Teams of people break off and form their own development studios all the time. Free Radical had splintered off Rare with a lot of the Goldeneye team. There is MiniMax games a two man development studio who split off from Rockstar living their dream by making S.P.A.Z. Then you have some real big names making a Wasteland sequel over in inxile. Peter Molyneux despite his hot air is a developer and he is breaking off from MS even though it gave him near unlimited resources.

Your full of it Tendoboy. Go read these. Some people aspire to be no more than a burger flipper. If they are satisfied with that that is great, more power to them and I hope they get paid enough to more than make ends meet. Others look higher. Some do it for the money, others for self growth, escape. Dreams are what makes life, drives progress, without it, you only exist. That is no way to live.

A lot of people in Michigan aspired to be auto workers because it paid good with benefits and it was a job they could be proud of that has a material impact on the world. Their aspirations were not to make cars, but to support their family with a good job and live life with a few beers on the side.

As for someone making their own car company, I give you the DeLorean. He wasn't successful monetarily, but it's a cultural icon and how many people can say they did that.

Honestly I don't see the point in arguing with this guy, I don't even think he thought about his point for more than 5 seconds. People create new companies all the time if they feel they can't climb any higher at their current company or they feel they could do it better. This isn't a phenomenon that's exclusive to the creative field.

Not all Americans are like this, you know. T_T

Unlocking now.  It's a good conversation in here, but let's keep it at a civil level.

I love how you derail threads then get upset about it. If you don't want your thread derailed, don't derail it.

Graphics matter to publishers, not really that much to developers, though some (id Software and others) do like to push it as far as they can just to see if they can do it.  Publishers like it because the eye candy makes it easier to sell the game to the public (maybe I should say the marketing team loves graphics, really).
