Gameboy SP a waste of time?
« on: May 12, 2003, 12:16:39 PM »
I have been thinking and maybe gameboy SP was a waste of time!!! I mean the graphics are the same, pretty much the only difference is the folding ability and the lighted screen. It is pretty much like to GBA. What do you think???

I think that you really want an SP a lot, but you either can't afford one, or no one will buy one for you so you are trying to convince yourself that it is crap.

If you didn't already own a GBA, the SP was the way to go unless you don't like it's feel. The front light and rechargable lithium battery are really nice features. If you already had a GBAm, though, and was happy with it, I see no reason the SP would be much better.

get the sp if you dont own the original yet
i love my gba sp- it feels good in my hands and the light makes a pretty big difference
its all up to preference- if you are willing to fork over the dough then do it
otherwise just wait a little bit after e3- the price should go down soon

Waste of time for whom?

It's not a new console.  It's not a replacement or upgrade.  It's another option for the GBA.  It's for people who want to get a better GBA and prefer the SP's design, or who don't have a GBA already.

Or you could be like me and get the SP.  I love it and would definitely not say it is a waste of time for Nintendo or for the consumer.

The original GBA has a nice comfy shape, but the SP is really, really cool -- what may seem seem like a bunch of small differences at first, make make a big difference in practice.  For instance, the original GBA is just a liiiiittle too big and clunky, so I'd always have to think about whether I really wanted to tote the thing along, but the SP is small enough to throw in your bag and carry around without a thought.  The light also obviously makes a big difference in letting you play whenever you want (not just when conditions are right), and the rechargeable batteries are really well done, they charge fast, and last a long time.  Absolutely worth the difference in money (and more I'd say).

o_O the sp is the greatest thing to hit hand held gaming since humans evolved from blobs of goo and got aposable thumbs

i had a gba, and it didn't get played that much, got an sp and it rekindled my love afair with mobile gameing, thats definatly not to say the regular gba is bad, i played it alot when i first got it, but now omg i love laying in bed about to goto sleep playing a bit of golden sun etc

and its a great asset to play at work now, i dont have to sit outside and get hassled by annoying customers, i can hide in the lunch room and play! hooray!

i was the one who said i was sticking with the original.  know why?  i couldn't afford an SP.  not only that, i didn't think it was that great, until i saw it under different light sources, like complete darkness.  i had an original GBA, and i bought the SP when i had earned enough money (and some extra $$).  of course then i thought somebody was buying my old GBA.  well, they changed their mind.  so i have 100 bucks less, oh well, i don't really care. my only regret was that there's probably going to be a price drop soon, i could have waited.  but i did find myself playing games i had near forgotten about.  since i've gotten the SP, i've been playing it more than any other system, by far.

Sheesh!  I'm not gonna buy one because I have a GBA already.  Mine's limited edition platinum ^_^

But I don't think SP is a waste.<_<

It's true the SP isn't as comfortable, and I'm not sure I like the "clicky" dpad, but it's more than an even tradeoff for the light, battery, and compact size. Like macsh said, the original is just a little big to carry around all the time, especially with a light attached to it (I've got that gamester floodlight, which is itself about the size of an SP).

Did anyone else notice that the SP's light turns off in sleep mode? or that the speaker is louder and clearer? (you can actually hear it outdoors!) The SP is full of thoughtful features beyond just a lightup screen, and very very far from being a waste of time (or money).

This from someone who doesn't even own one... I had my Black GBA imported, and I'd really love to do it again with the SP. Curse my empty wallet!

The SP is a wonderful version of the Gameboy and I honestly enjoy it much more that the original GBA. When I showed my SP to my sister, she complained that I had too many Gameboys already and that it was a waste of money. To which I asked her how many different models of cell phones she's gone through the last couple of years. That shut her up.
Of course, later on I caught her sneaking a play of Super Mario Advance 2

But yeah, if you prefer the original GBA to the SP, then that's all fine and dandy too.

everyday i get closer and closer to my goal of acquiring the GBA SP with spare change.. i love the GBA but i am always worried about the screen getting scratched.. when i get the SP this summer i can just throw it in my pocket and take it anywhere without having to worry too much about scratches from possible loose change etc.

i hope that the future incarnations of the Game Boy carry on the SP's style..
I'll shut up now...

after seeing the huge success of the SP, which really was a huge success, i doubt nintendo would go back to bare screened gba, the flip function is the best, i cant reiterate how much i love my sp, more than my cube! (and i love my cube!) i kinda feel ashamed to admit i like it cause it looks cool also, which im usually very againsed, yargh! its the best

well, you don't have to worry about gatting the screen scratched, but the platinum paint is another story.  i was extra careful to give my sp it's own little pocket with no games or change in it, but it's still scratched.

The GBA SP is hot.  So hot, in fact, that I want it to have my children.

Question: if a GBA SP had my children, would they be little Game&Watches?

I love the SP, in fact I traded my old GBA in for it; however, I will trade in my SP for one of the new coloured ones shown at E3.

It was a great idea~!

Does anyone have any sales figures on the SP? I wonder how it sold/is selling compared to the original.

Also, if the headphone thing annoys you, I believe Mad Catz offers an accessory that allows the power cable and the headphones to be plugged in at the same time.
