I wouldn't object to a Super Mario Galaxy 3 if it were offered to me, but I don't expect it to happen. As we all know, Galaxy 2 was a special case - they had loads of ideas leftover after the first game and saw enough mileage in the overarching concept of planetoids and gravitational insanity to go another round. Now, I'm not going to say that EAD Tokyo couldn't come up with even more things to fit into that playbook, but I sense that they're going in a different direction with Mario for now.

No matter what happens, it's all about imagination and variety. That's why the theme of Galaxy worked so well. Don't get me wrong, I really like Mario Sunshine, but the tropical resort thing clearly had some restrictions on the creativity of the level design. The common opinion was that Sunshine was best in those abstract stages with no FLUDD. Those levels were the cleverest, the most challenging and (unsurprisingly) the most similar to what we got later in the Galaxy titles.

Honestly though, the short answer to this question is that I don't know. Nintendo can be notoriously difficult to predict.

I seriously doubt it. I'd be genuinely shocked if Nintendo announced a Mario Galaxy 3.
I'm sure there's SOME new mechanic that Nintendo is excited about bringing to the series and is already working on.

I hope not, while I love the Galaxy games, it is probably time for Nintendo to try something new with the series. Heck I wouldn't even mind a game designed like the original Mario 64, or a follow up to Sunshine. But that is unlikely since Nintendo does like mixing things up with the 3D Mario's, which, in the long run is a good thing.

Maybe it will be for the 3DS and use the dual analog slider addon?

Like Killer Man Jaro said, Galaxy 2 was a special case of the developer having a lot of ideas still leftover and wanting to make a direct sequel for them.  This is one of the reasons why Miyamoto himself even said Galaxy 2 was made with the fans of first Galaxy in mind, something Nintendo doesnt usually do since they know direct sequels made soley for fans of the first game normally sell worse then the original.  Which is exactly what happened with Galaxy 2, selling less then the original.

Of course for Galaxy 2 since it was made with a lot of the first Galaxys assests, it was cheaper to make and so selling less then the original wasnt a big deal for Nintendo.  For the WiiU though, everything is going to have to be made new again, because of the huge gap in power between the systems.  Which means Nintendo is going to be aiming for bigger sales this time because the budget for the next WiiU Mario will be much bigger then Galaxy 2, and they know releasing a direct sequel like Galaxy 3 would sell less then Galaxy 2.  This is why there will never be a Galaxy 3, and the 3D Mario for the WiiU will be something different this time, like Sunshine and the first Galaxy were for their system.

I started this topic because I was playing Galaxy 2 the other day and then I started brainstroming ideas for what could be in SM Galaxy 3. However, I do recognize that there is a slim chance of the this happening, but everytime I play Galaxy 2 I get this sense that something still needs to be refined in this series.

Most  of my ideas for Galaxy 3 centered around new worlds. For example:

A cross over with the Sonic series where Mario traverses the Green Hill Galaxy.

The frog suit returns to battle Wart in Wart's Swamp Galaxy.

A cel-shaded Mario Galaxy similar to Wind Waker.

A Galaxy that takes advantage of the Wii U's processor to allow Mario to fly around with the cape power up from SM World.

Those ideas range from terrible to pointless, wich is why I'd much rather see both Mario and EAD Tokyo try something new in their next games.

If there was another Mario Galaxy, it wouldn't be for 3DS.  Otherwise, they would have just made the new Mario 3DS game part of that series rather than naming it "Super Mario 3D Land".

As for the Wii U, I think there's a better chance of it having a Mario Galaxy 3 than of Nintendo ever developing a new IP on the device.  I'd rather they took Mario in a different direction, though I'm not sure what.  Space is kind of played-out as a gimmick after 2 successive games using it as the setting.

I have literally no idea what you could possibly be referring to. Galaxy 2 is damn near perfect.

Super Mario WII U--yes but it won't be called Galaxy 3.  Like your ideas about crossplatforming, always wanted an Mario/Disney Kingdom Hearts game myself.

EAD Tokyo should focus on making a 3D Donkey Kong game for the Wii U that incorporates the best qualities of DK64 and the Galaxy series into one game.

There is no best qualities of DK64! Now you just want Chimps in Space.

If EAD did a 3D Donkey Kong I feel like it would be very similar to Mario no matter what they did. If they could do a 3D co-op DK then I wouldn't care what they experimented with.

If anyone was going to make a 3D Donkey Kong, they should start from scratch. DK64 is not the best jumping block.

I actually think a First Person DK would be pretty great. Swinging on vines across chasms, getting blown out of barrels, and riding an ostrich would be especially exciting in FP.

I wouldn't mind a sort of Mario Galaxy take on Pikmin, with certain levels taking place over sections of small planetoids.  That would rock, actually, and it would fit since Galaxy and Pikmin were both birthed from the Mario 128 tech demo.

I kinda agree with this.. Although I really do hope to see a mario game return to 64 or sunshine form.   I really loved the exploration aspect.   The castle hub on Nintendo 64 was an amazing place to explore for the first time.  While today it doesn't quite carry the same marvel, back then it was amazing.

I would love to have that sense of exploration back.  I didn't quite get that from Galaxies. While I loved them and had a blast, I never had that sense of  "Whoa I didn't know I could go through here and find this area!"
With modern technology especially with what the Wii U might be packing.. I would love to see the castle return as a hub world, and perhaps even the surrounding areas included.

They could still work in some Galaxy type crazy levels, while still having a bit of classical exploration.  Want to do a level based on a giant cake or running about on giant food?   Put the level in a little bakery shop just outside the castle in a small town.   Go back to crazy space worlds?  Put some levels in the observatory.

Suppose I am just wish full thinking, but I really would love to see that sense of over world exploration and some exploration brought back into some of the level's.   Not like Galaxy was without exploration, it just didn't feel quite the same to me.  Of course that's just my personal opinion. :)
