MFT: 31 Days 31 Movies Halloween Movie Marathon Sign-up thread
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:33:29 AM »
Halloween is approaching so it's time to queue up all those horror movies you love to watch or been meaning to get around to.

There are 31 days in the month, so I figured that between the lot of us, we can make it through 31 "Horror" movies in those 31 days.

The idea is to watch the movie of your choice (there will be a list of suggestions) and then comment on it, review it, MFT it, criticize it or whatever and then post that on a day designated for you.

Everyone will be able to comment on your movie that day, but it will only be about whatever movie you chose on that day.

example:
I choose Scariest Movie & Bloodfest 2012
I am assigned to post on Oct. 5th & Oct. 12th
I can watch them now and create my post now if I feel like or wait till closer to the date, but I wouldn't post the first movie (in the MFT thread)until the 5th and the second until the 12th.

Here is a list of suggestion:

Good Movies
01. Nightmare on Elm Street (original) (Already MFT'd)
02. Friday the 13th
03. Halloween
04. American Psycho
05. Monster Squad
06. In the Mouth of Madness
07. Creep Show
08. [REC]
09. Gremlins
10. Gremlins 2
11. Fallen
12. Constantine (horror movie?)
13. The Mist
14. The Thing
15. Candy Man
16. Jaws
17. Chucky
18. Slither
19. Alien
20. It
21. Final Destination
22. Body Snatchers (not sure which one)
23. The Exorcist
24. The Blob
25. Bram Stokers Dracula
26. The Lost Boys
27. From Dusk Till Dawn
28. The Hills Have Eyes
29. Dawn of the Dead
30. Trick r Treat
31. Shaun of the Dead

So Bad their good Movies
01. Jason X
02. Jack Frost
03. Leprechaun in the Hood
04. Freddie vs Jason
05. (most of the rest of the NoES & Ft13th movies)
06. Puppet Master (already MFT'd)
07. Attack of the Sabertooth
08. Gingerdead Man

13. Killer Klowns From Outerspace
14. Critters
19. Dead Alive
20. Alien vs Predator
21. Tales from the Hood
22. Ahhh!! Zombies

Movies I'm not sure where to place or if they should even be on the list:
The Faculty
American werewolf in Paris/London
Eight Legged Freaks
Troll
Ghoulies (any of them)
House on Haunted Hill/Return to House on Haunted Hill
House
Exorcism of Emily Rose
Haunting in Conneticut
Insidious
Ju On/The Grudge/2
The Ring/2
I know what you did last summer
Urban Legend/2
Phantasm/II
The Evil Dead
Sleepy Hollow
Tremors
Mimic
Children of the Corn
Helraiser/2/3
2001 Maniacs
House of 1,000 Corpses
Queen of the Damned
Blood Rayne
Feast
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Attack the Block
Scream/2/3/4
Cube
Saw
Poltergeist
Pet Cemetary

1st 6 participants get to choose their movie first.
The list is for ideas, and you don't have to choose from the list.
But don't choose an already chosen movie (if you're not 1st) or one that you personally already MFT'd.

How is it that Dead Alive isn't in the Good Movies list? It's deliberately hilarious and has some overall good special effects. It's like one of two good films Peter Jackson has done. :P

Is Netflix group viewing on XBox live an option? I would love to chat with some NWR bros while making fun of movies!

Everything is an option.

Netflix over Xbox Live, Hulu over Skype, wherever over whatever.
You can organize it right here..... Why didn't do that before?

Does Live have group veiwing over Netflix?

Yeah, you can join the same movie as your friends and it will sync the movie for everyone. You can chat with the mics, of course. It also has your avatars at the bottom watching the movie (MST3K style) and you can control their gestures and stuff. It's pretty funny. Or you can just watch the movie full screen instead.

the new thing is a prequel to the 80s Thing, this takes place at the Norwegian camp, actually if you watch John Carpenter's The Thing this ties into that one like clockwork. The Thing is a remake itself of The Thing from another World. I have faith in this. I also know how its going to end.  A dog running towards a helicopter.

I checked out Monsturd on youtube earlier this morning

I LOL'd several times. Low budget horror that most certainly doesn't take itself seriously.
I will probably MFT it as one of the 31 movies of Oct.

The new thing is a prequel to the 80s Thing.

It's a prequel that is essentially a remake, but with terrible CGI instead of real, timeless FX. :(

Carpenter's film was always more akin to At the Mountains of Madness than it really was with the original Thing from Another World. It's not surprising, really. Carpenter didn't do a remake with The Thing, he did a proper adaptation of the book, Who Goes There. The sprinkling of Lovecraftian tones was most likely a personal choice, considering the more obvious nod he later gave with In the Mouth of Madness.

If it's a prequel, then essentially it's the same story right? It might answer some questions like, where did it come from and why? But that's pretty irrelevant to the actual plot. I thought the 80's movie was perfect especially since the effects, directing and pace still hold up today. Making a prequel just to tell the same story but to 'legitimize' it is careless, unnecessary and overall, deplorable.

I'll still watch it, but the reason for it being made will cloud my judgement.

as Morari continues to go on his crusade yet again about CGI, I have to wonder if he's seen the clips cut from Carpenter's the Thing?

and as much as I love The Thing, my sister in law walked in and complained about how cheesey the effects look. I don't even think the new Thing is entirely CGI either. They don't even show but one effect in the trailer. Not to mention the Director said practical effects will be used for the creature sometimes. The CGI that will be there is from the guys who did District 9. Even on the DVD commentary on Carpenters when they enter the Norwegian camp to find a dead Norwegian body(the guy who slit his wrist and thought), John Carpenter and Kurt Russel are talking about how silly all the effects looked when you saw them in person. This is before you could easily see film dailies, so they just had to pray it looked good on the final product. Its a good thing Carpenter uses minimalistic lighting so it masks the cheesiness.  The biggest change that I could see would be the tentacles, those things were just guys whipping at things in the 80s version. Not to mention Carpenter might make a cameo...its hard to say He had a scheduling conflict, but then they had re-shoots.

also practical effects are handled by these guys

Your sister in law has no taste. :P

The CGI in District 9 was actually pretty decent, though. They very smartly made the aliens hard bodied, so the generally poor lighting and reflections found in CGI didn't matter as much. My problem with District 9 was more that everyone in it was a completely unlikable asshole, save for the two main aliens. I would have rather the film followed them, leading an uprising and slaughtering all of the oppressive humans.

any other movies you 2 (& Stogi) wanna watch for the month of Oct.?

speaking of which, this never ceases to be creepy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuKjBIBBAL8

I await the day when someone makes a movie about that. Something based on actual science that could possible happen today... or have been happening for decades and being covered up.

scene: In a lab studying the thousands of cordyceps that each specifically attack one type of species and the effect it has on their brains. As they try to unravel the genetic code of how it controls the insects brains, they've been working on the theory of human mind control througha  controlled substance that mimics this fungus. After a lap accident, a mixing of fungi and human DNA research and a small chemical reaction explosion (not fire, but more a puff of smoke as spores release), 2 of the 7 lab scientist are caught with their mask off and inhale the mixture.
Everyone writes it off as not dangerous as all the cordyceps only affect insects.

scene 2:
School year just started and kids are spreading sickness around like candy between themselves. 2 out of every 10 kids has some sort of cold/snotty nose/cough or something. Kids come home, 1 of them sick and supposedly gets the dad sick too (who works at the lab). Feeling under the weather, the lab guy starts to call in sick after a day or so more at the office, blames it on his son and the new school year. Over the next 3 days he gets worse and won't get out of bed. Fever, chills, glazed over look in his eyes, but refuses to go to the hospital and just wants sleep after self medicating. The following morning, the wife wakes up to horror as her husband has this fungus growing out of his mouth, nose, eyes, ears, and every other hole in his body. She screams and seconds later the 3 children of various ages (elementary<the one who had the cold>, middle & HS) come running into the room and are in shock. At that very moment the fungus "pops" releasing more spores.

Start of your next human extinction world wide epidemic movie right there. And it would be scary, because it's based in reality and may not just be possible, but also already happening.

humorous, overly critical and/or extremely detailed review (screen caps optional). nitpick your favorite scenes, tear down the dialog, the special effects, compare it to the source material. It doesn't really matter.

You do what you do and we will likely all discuss that.

Since there only seems to be 5 of us
Stogi, SUPER, Morari, Perm, BNM
maybe we'll make it the 15 moves if October and figure out a way to sync our streams and live chat a few of them.

I don't have that many horror movies mostly due to how bloody boring I find them, so There aren't many on the list I can pick. I can take From Dusk Till Dawn and/or Constantine/Black Sheep(Not listed). Give me a date and I will get cracking. I would also be happy to break out Steam/Skype(Never used it) for any other movie I might have If I know your times/place in GMT.

BlacnNmild theres an outer limits episode a long those lines. Also, I would strongly consider making a movie like that. I've been writing a totally different alien movie, but its something that can't be done low budget, not something you can start your career with. Its a totally different type of alien.
