Fatal Frame Spin-off Announced for 3DS
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:25:26 AM »

Shinrei Camera is a new game set in the Fatal Frame world.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27794

Tecmo's haunted photography simulator Fatal Frame is coming to 3DS with an AR twist, in the form of Shinrei (Spirit) Camera.

In a cooperation with Nintendo as their publisher, producer Keisuke Kikuchi and his Fatal Frame team at Tecmo are developing the spin-off set in the same world and continuity as the main series. The game will come pre-packed with a haunted notebook for use with the 3DS' augmented reality functions. When the camera points to the various pages of the book, the AR kicks in and reveals secret messages, strange spiritual vortexes, clues about the game's story and past and of course, vengeful apparitions. Players will have to manually turn the pages and scan them to discover all of the ghostly secrets contained within.

Shinrei Camera is set to feature three game modes. First is a story-based adventure much like the rest of the series, a mini game collection focusing on the enclosed notebook and a "ghost camera" mode allowing you to take spooky photos of yourself and your friends.

There is no known release date yet, nor any hint of plans to localize the game.

I always wanted to play this series.  I'm excited about the potential here.

I’ve always wanted to take spooky photos of myself and my friends. :) This sound like an interesting concept; but my only concern would be the length of the game. If it is priced appropriately, I would strongly consider getting it.

Very interested to hear more about this game. I'm not sold on the AR feature as being more than a gimmick... but it could still be a fun gimmick, and 3D effects could be put to great use in a horror-based game like Fatal Frame.

Probably a niche title, but right up my alley.

Well if the game isn't a buggy mess it will actually be allowed to leave Japan.

Was Fatal Frame Wii a buggy mess? I heard some complaints about the controls, but also heard some praise for the game. Would've like to be able to make my own opinion...

Fatal Frame IV supposedly had more game breaking bugs and glitches than the allowable amount of rat poop in chocolate.

Nintendo simply wasn't gonna allow it to be published as is.

Fatal Frame IV was and is arguably the best in the series, the only major complaints were an apparent drop in difficulty. I have the game and I personally love it - even after playing through the original trilogy on PS2 - and the only bugs I'm coming across are due to the "it works, that's good enough" programming of the fan translation patch, which sometimes messes up text size/alignment in menus and ghost lists.
That can hardly be blamed on the game itself, however.

Nintendo didn't want to localize it because it has a niche fanbase and some crappier horror titles (*cough* Ju-on) had saturated and soured the market. The prospect of it selling was rather low.

That's not the story I heard.

I heard that Nintendo gave them a chance to fix what was wrong and they refused, so the game never left Japan. FFIV devs called Nintendo's bluff and somehow everyone involved (including us) lost the hand.
