Rytmik vs Music On vs Rhythm Core Alpha?
« on: September 06, 2011, 01:11:27 PM »

Long story:

Guilty Admission: I love DS homebrew. There isn't much content actually worth downloading, but a few exceptional apps made up for the lack in quantity. Two in particular saw massive amounts of "play" on my old DS Lite. Can anyone here help me find replacements now that I've moved up to a 3DS?

Colors! was the first homebrew app that really caught my attention, so it's no surprise that I'm eagerly awaiting the eShop version that is scheduled to come out this Fall. Combined with the announcement of Flipnote Memo, my limited drawing skills will have found their outlet. (Inchworm Animation is also very tempting, but I'm waiting to see how Flipnote Memo turns out before paying for an animation app.)

However, the other homebrew app that I most enjoyed isn't as easy to replace.

NitroTracker was the second homebrew app that I deemed a "must own", and offered a fun and easy way to fool around with beats while on the go. It had enough power and flexibility to create some excellent results if you had some talent or dedicated enough time - and best of all it didn't cost a dime! While looking through the eShop to find a replacement, several apps looked interesting: the Music On series, the Rytmik series, and also Rhythm Core Alpha.

My feeling is that Rytmik (the original release) might be my best bet, because it seems to have samples and features that will be most useful for my untrained hands to play with. But it's hard to find helpful reviews that really describe the different feature sets and intended audiences for each app - and doubly hard to find useful comparisons between the three options.

I'm hoping there are a few creative people on NWR who have tried playing with a couple of these music apps and are willing to share their opinions about what worked, what didn't, and which one ended up being the best investment for them. I just want something to play with, that will let me create and play with some beats while on the go... and hopefully to save my creations for later so they can be tweaked or shared with friends.

TLDR;

So can anyone compare the pros and cons of what music apps are available on 3DS right now (Music On, Rytmic, Rhythm Core Alpha)?

Recommendations are also welcome, especially if they can include some criticism about what could have been improved.

Short addition: Should probably mention that I've tried Korg-DS10. It's obviously a solid piece of software but not quite what I'm looking for in price/availability/ease of use. It's still an option... just not sure it's the toy I want to pursue.
