Metal Gear

This is going to sound really stupid, since I have had the cart for the game for over 10 years, and I played it a lot back in the day... but I just finished the game today.  I started a new game last night, and finished the game once and for all today.  This was entirely inspired by the new MGS 3 trailer which can be found in my sig if you missed all the other threads about it around here...  Of course I didn't finish it without a guide, as the game is stupidly difficult, but it was a good game nonetheless.

I was considering lifting my self-imposed ban from playing Metal Gear Solid, but I figured I would just code something instead. In my continuing reborn obsession with Metal Gear, I have decided to make my own Metal Gear game.  Anyone know what the laws are like on making a non-profit game based off of a commercial game?  It wouldn't be any different than fan fiction would it?

I think I am going to go hunt down some suitable sprites now.

So yeah, how many of you have played and finished the original Metal Gear game?

Are you going to hack it through an emulator, or try to build it from scratch?  If the latter, I don't see any reason to make it a Metal Gear game... just do it in a similar style, it gives you much more freedom.

NO!  I want to make a Metal Gear game!  (Just one level though).  After I make a level, I will rewrite it to be my own original game most likely.

And yes, I am coding from scratch on a TBD platform.  I am currently debating GBA or PC.  I might be doing it on PC though, as music design would be a lot easier.

It's currently underway for the PC.  So far I have the sprite engine up and running, and I have begun work on the tile engine.

Anyways, I am here asking if anyone wants to beta test the game for me?  It will get a public release at version 1.0 (It's at 0.1 right now), but I would like one or two beta testers to check and see if the code will run on their computers at the various milestones, and let me know if there are any mistakes I made.  I would prefer people who have played the original Metal Gear games, as that's the feel I am going for.

Just to get that clear: Fan Fiction is illegal. Most companies won't sue you, but some are eager to do so (Funimation hates DBZ-mods). Remember, that as long as it's identifiable as their intellectual property or a derivative of it, it's owned by them. If they get to know of you and think you are a threat to their sales, they can just C&D you.

Have fun Grey Ninja!  I'd rather spent my free time playing games.  Or wasting it on this forum!
