Pikmin Coming to Wii U
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:50:01 PM »

Wii development of the game was stopped, and Wii U development began.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26645

Pikmin is coming to Wii U, said Shigeru Miyamoto at the E3 2011 developer presentation.

The game was worked on for Wii for several years, but recently, the next Pikmin game is indeed coming to Nintendo's next system. It is likely that it will be a launch title, or at least close to launch.

If there was any chance of me not buying a Wii U at launch, it's gone now.

I can't say I'm surprised to see this, given there's been no information about the game since it was announced. I've never played the series so it doesn't really matter to me, personally.

Ripping this game away from the Wii and diverting it to the Wii-U is like taking food from a beggar who is dying of starvation and then giving it to someone who isn't even born yet. And needless to say, since this game spent years under development for the Wii when it comes to the Wii-U we're all going to have to put up with Ian bitching about how much it "looks like a GC game".

But I guess this answers the question of why there aren't going to be any Wii games for the rest of the year other than Zelda: They have all been canceled and diverted to the Wii-U instead.

The Wii has had a good life.

The Wuu need not be malnourished just to keep the Wii alive a little longer.

There's still some more to the Wii lineup than Zelda. It's missing a couple games that I'd want, but I'm still fine with it.

I thought Kirby was Nintendo's Duke Nukem Forever. It's been in development for what, eight years now?

Makes perfect sense, really.  The Wii U controller will be perfect for RTS-style gaming.  I bet they weren't totally satisfied with the way it was turning out on Wii, and once the new controller was conceived they moved it over.

Soon the Vitality Sensor will be our Duke Nukem Forever.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Pikmin was created by Miyamoto, I would think it would be out by now. I think he's working on too many projects at once.

Dude that game got cancelled along time ago. Where ya been? ;)

Not surprised by this. Pikmin at launch would be better than Mario or Zelda. Yeah...I said it.

I doubt Pikmin will look like a Wii or GC game, they have almost a year to retool it visually. Then again who knows. This is fantastic news, I want Pikmin!

So frustrating that we've waited this long for more Pikmin. I'm not counting on anything until we get concrete details and screenshots.

Pikmin 3 has been a long time coming, looks like finally it will make it over. With a touch screen control I think it will be a really good interface for Pikmin.

I think they have time to make Pikmin 3 look good.  Hell Pikmin 2 looks better than most Wii games.

Though one thing I like about Pimin is the controls.  It's a very intuitive and clever way to control a (sorta) RTS game.  With the touchscreen there is the obvious tendency to make it control more like Warcraft.  But to me that's missing the whole point.  Pikmin isn't about controlling Pikmin, it's about controlling Olimar.  We'll see how the do it.

But I am interested.  I would buy a Wii U for a new Pikmin, unless it just got creamed in reviews or was dumbed down for casuals in some way or the Wii U costs too much money.  But assuming things go right, yeah, it's a killer app for me.

Ian and I agree. There is no God.

I remember jotting down a dream I had about playing Pikmin 3. I was more Olimar than myself with a controller. I know I wrote it down somewhere here in the forums....

Regardless, I remember I dreamt up several new types of Pikmin. One of them was a Ghost or Demon Pikmin, whose specialty was to possess larger creatures and enslave them to your will. One of the examples I gave was possessing a butterfly to fly across a map, like a warp point. Another was to possess a lone Mama Bulborb, hopping it its mouth to safely trek across a herd of them.

Not to toot my own horn, but I thought it was pretty creative. And it makes me wonder, how creative Miyamoto and team will be?

I remember suggesting this a loooong time ago, but I want Pikmin 3 to be more like Zelda.  I want a large, open game world with multiple environments.  Collecting ship parts (or whatever) would involve travelling to different areas and using Pikmin not only to battle, but to solve puzzles and explore.  The different types pikmin lend themselves perfectly to some clever puzzles and fun boss battles.  It could still incorporate every element of the previous titles but expand on the concept so much more.  I didn't explain that very elegantly but I think you get the point :P
