Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata gave an interview to the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. During the interview he expressed the desire for the Nintendo 3DS to exceed the 140 million units that the DS has currently sold through.

A key factor in Nintendo’s plan to increase their dominance over the portable games market, is to deliver new types of software packed full of surprises for the consumer. He also offered hints at what may be next for the Super Mario franchise, stating that they are experimenting with gameplay where Mario will run into the screen and strike blocks in the air.

Iwata also commented on the encroaching smart phone games market. Stating "We're at a period where it will be difficult to keep the value of our content if we are unable to offer experiences that can't be had on Smartphones."

I honestly think the 3DS could actually do just as well, maybe even better than the DS has.
