I'm not saying you need the sword, but the process of obtaining it is simply not fun. I didn't even get it on my first playthrough because some seashells are hidden in very random places. I like to get 100% on a game if I can, and Link's Awakening is not fun to do that. But yes, the game's pretty easy so a stronger sword isn't needed.

I agree that some of the shells are a little unusual to find (I wouldn't say "random", like some of the Pieces of Heart that you have to get from Maple in OoA/OoS... grrr...) - and getting the sword before Level 5 does take some advanced knowledge, but most people should be able to get it by the end of the game with just standard Zelda exploration.

Don't forget that one where you have to float over the pit with the rooster.

That one was stupid. The game has a few one-chancers that are annoying.

It's only stupid if you forget to do it right.

Obviously, this is just my humble opinion, but I just looked through the list of seashells...
15 of them, IMHO, are ones that you should easily come across during your normal exploration of the game.  4 of them are a little more difficult to find while 7 of them fall in the category of "Hard".  Using this made up criteria, you really only have to luck into finding one of the "hard" ones...

My opinion was that I don't think they're fun to search for, not that they are difficult to find.

My point is that you don't really have to "search" for them.  15 of them are "hidden" in plain sight.

Probably should wait until the 3DS/VC release...
