Does anyone play using Fightsticks--
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:32:53 AM »
Looking at a new project coming up, going convert an older xbox 360 into an arcade cabinet, and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good cheap fight stick.  Looking at sub $100 since I'm going to need two.

Looks like I have only two choices Madcatz or Hori brands.  Madcatz seem to have to upper hand but costs alot more than I bargin for.  Might just get those Hori's.

I got the one that came in the Tekken 6 bundle, Hori IIRC. Works well for games like Recettear.

If you're going to build a cabinet, I would recommend buying a HotRod SE (if you can find one) or something like that as a starting point, or just buying a bunch of buttons and whatnot and making your own. You'll save a ton of money, and end up with a much better product. Just about any arcade-style controller you can find in stores will be horse ****. I built an arcade cabinet about 10 years ago, but got pissed and destroyed it because I was an idiot and didn't realize it wouldn't fit through the doorway in my room.

Hotrod SE are quite hard to find nowadays but it did seem people found a few adapters to get them to work on the Xbox.  There were two other outdated arcade sticks, one called the X-arcade and the Slikstick (which was a monster).  Sounds like you have to tweak them a bit to get them to work but it is possible but there're rare to find too.

There's a forecloser going one with my local arcade right now and I placed a few bids on a few dated arcade machines--namely SFIII.  I really liked that one and yeah a few buttons stick and the paints pealing but it was in great shape otherwise.

All you need is a soldering iron and some controller guts to make a real arcade setup work on any console. Newer XBox 360 controllers are very easy to use, from what I understand.

I play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom with the one that came with it.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

That would be pretty simple, I imagine. If that's something anyone is interested it, I'd be happy to do the work if they supplied the controllers (for a fee). This thread is making me want to make a new one for my PS3 (maybe 360). Just need to find some cheap wireless controllers.

Yes, you can do the conversion:

The Tatsunoko vs Capcom sticks are a good deal, and work pretty well.  Best of all, they are easy to customize... so you get a good base to work with for custom sticks.  I really wonder if it wouldn't be better to just build your own from parts?

Hey, good thing I, as a professor of fight sticks and arcade hardware, happened to drop by this thread.

Step one: ignore everyone else in this thread.

If you're using a 360 as your only hardware, do this:

Order 2X madcatz SE fightsticks. They're designed to conveniently come apart and they're only like 30 bucks if you're a smart shopper. They have button and stick quick release connections so uou won't even have to do any soldering!

Order some new sticks and buttons for them since the ones they come with are kinda trash. I recommend Sanwa JLF sticks (~25 bux) and Sanwa buttons (~2 bux?) - order them from lizardlick.com or the madcatz store, whichever gets you a better deal. Keep the old buttons and sticks as backups or whatever I guess; I haven't had any Sanwa stuff fail on me ever, though.

TE sticks already come with Sanwa stuff in them, you might consider getting those instead if you get a good deal. Or maybe design your cabinet just to have TE sticks 'dock' in them - I've seen setups like that, it's really cool, actually.

hit me up on aim/msn/facebook and I'll talk your ear off.

I was under the impression that the 360 sticks mentioned were much more expensive than described... but if they really are that affordable then this is the best advice in the thread.

Here's a setup using docking TE sticks!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFXw57NypYU

I'm starting to think I like this idea best because it's very little work and you can also take the sticks back out at your whim. The TE sticks are also perfectly level, and already have the Sanwa parts.
