Chrome for a Cause - Dec. 15th - 19th
« on: December 15, 2010, 01:53:11 PM »
All you do is surf the net like usual and the more tabs you open over the next 5 days earns donations to charities from Google.

Participate in charitable projects with the rest of the Chrome community.  Install the Chrome for a Cause extension and your web browsing will drive donations made to charities around the world.  Between December 15 - 19, every tab you open will support a good cause. To find out more about this effort and the organizations we're partnering with, visit http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/p/cause/

How it works
The chrome for a cause extension will count your tabs while you browse the web. At the end of the day, you'll be asked to choose a charity to receive your tabs. Every day between December 15 and 19 presents the chance to contribute your tabs, so you can choose to support the same charity or pick a different one each day.

Privacy
Just so you know, this extension will be tracking your tab count, but won't store any of your browsing history.

The Causes
The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.
charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Doctors Without Borders is an independent, international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid in nearly 70 countries to those most in need.
Un Techo para mi País is working in 19 countries across the Americas to improve the quality of life of impoverished families through the construction of transitional housing.

So while you are out there surfing the deepest darkest corners of the internet to fulfill your wildest curiosities, you could be helping someone not as privileged as you to one day do the same.

There's an upper limit of 250 tabs a day - as I learned during one particularly intense session over at TVTropes.

yeah, but that's 25 books or trees donated/planted a day.
And all you did was what you normally do while on the internet.

I've already opened about 21 tabs since I've posted this and I haven't really done anything other than check my e-mail and search a few sales.

That's awesome.

Not to exploit google or anything, but you can rack up the tabs counter just by clicking the "+" sign repeatedly until you can't open anymore, closing the browser, then doing it again.

Yeah I noticed that exploit but really, it's just so easy to open up tabs browsing as a normally do that it doesn't really matter. This morning/midday alone, I racked up 25 points just doing some on-line window shopping. I donated those points to vaccinations.

In the last two hours or so, I've racked up 59 points doing the same thing.

You can't exploit them too much anyway:

That's pretty much standard for all charities like this where a company agrees to donate money based on consumer actions. Still nice of them to do though. I don't know how much I will be able to help though since I won't get my new computer until the weekend (I am not at home right now and can't download stuff on the computer I am using).
