Fatal Frame 2 remake announced for the Wii
« on: September 29, 2010, 12:50:36 PM »
Another surprise from the conference, a remake of Fatal Frame 2 for the Wii.

Hopefully Tecmo doesn't make this one a bug filled mess like they did with Fatal Frame 4 so Nintendo will actually allow it's release outside of Japan this time.

Fatal Frame 2 is a good game (though that footage doesn't look much better, if any, than the PS2 version), but I have no hope whatsoever that this game will cross over from Japan considering IV didn't.  If we do get it, we'd better get the Director's Cut version.

Or you could just play Fatal Frame 2 on the Xbox, because it's the same game (just without motion controls).  Or if you're willing to give up getting the only happy ending possible in any version of that game, you could just play the PS2 version.

I have the PS2 version. I've had it for the better part of a decade, in fact, and still haven't beat it. Strange that they're porting it to the Wii...right?

Not really.  It's an easy cash grab without having to do a whole lot of work, and Fatal Frame 2 is generally considered the best of the 3 released in North America.

The only reason IV didn't get localized is because the controls sucked and Tecmo Koei refused Nintendo's demand to fix the controls if they wanted it released outside of Japan. Hopefully the remake is done better.

Are we even sure this is a remake?  Because that trailer looks an awful lot like a straight-up port, with no noticeable improvement over the other versions.  As I've already played the original version, I'd appreciate it more if it was a remake, but it doesn't look like one so far.

Beats me, I never played or saw the original. I suppose this could be like the Resident Evil Archives games (which were also just ports), but at least this time it would be for a game that is not currently playable on Wii.

I have more hope if they don't mess up the controls. FFIV was a flawed game from everything I read and poorly translated, control wise, for the Wii. That was likely a sticking point in releasing it here

You need to see an eye doctor.

If you seriously see no improvement then you really need to get your vision checked out because you're a danger to others when you drive.

Fair enough.  I played the game on my PS3, so the game looked a little better than that PS2 screenshot.  Besides, it's hard to notice a difference in the video.  Was the insult really necessary, though?  Besides, I'm curious how the game looked on the original Xbox, since that's the definitive version of the game and the one I'd expect to be the base for this version.

Possible Points of Contention:

1) The Wii screenshot has clearly been uprezed. It's probably running on somebody's computer, not the Wii itself.

2) The character models and costumes are fundamentally different. This could be evidence of an "enhanced port" if not a straight-up remake.

3) The noise filter shown in the PS2 screenshot is present in the original game and had gameplay consequences (the closer you get to a ghost, the grainier it got). The fact that there is no filter in the Wii version suggests that this is a cutscene, in which case the better character models could simply be for a pre-rendered cutscene.

I think it would have been better if they spent this time and resources fixing the game they already made so that it can be released outside of japan instead of remaking a game that the fans have already played before and might not get to play this remake because it suffers from the same mistakes as the last game they made. This is of course assuming Nintendo will be publishing this remake too.

Indeed.  I certainly would buy this remake/enhanced director's cut port of Fatal Frame 2 if it crossed over to the U.S. (I was a big fan of that game on the PS2), but the game in the franchise I'd really like to play officially localized is #4.

To be honest, I'm kind of surprised with the Wii's tendency to pick-up rail shooters that we never got a rail shooter version of Fatal Frame ala Pokemon Snap.

I hops that this does come here and somehow (through high sales or something) causes decisions to be made that bring 4 over as well. Maybe they could give us a twin pack release of FF2+4 here? Probably does depend on who is publishing, Nintendo or others.

Best post of the day. I'm actually surprised we have not gotten a sequel considering the Wii pointer controls would work great for taking pictures of pokemon.
