Twitter account
« on: September 27, 2010, 03:34:23 PM »
Hey I am a follower of the NWR twitter account,  I'm pretty sure I've been following it since it's inception. I wanted ask if it was possible NWR could poll the readers and see who actually cares about these posts: "I uploaded a YouTube video -- X tinyur.com/X"It seems like these come in all to often, they are like spam.  And I've never gone and watched one of the videos they've linked. I just watch next time I'm on a computer. Considering this is the only twitter account I follow, I think they post probably 10 times a day. Which is quite a lot. So I was kinda hoping NWR could reduce the number of posts.thanks.

While they can be kind of annoying, unfortunately that's sort of what Twitter is about. I actually like the fact that they are posted on more than just the website, as I am able to see what is happening on the site, even when I can't get to it at the moment.

Here's exactly what I'm talking about, there have been 10 updates in the last 10 hours. At one point, between 12:20 and 12:29 PM (Pacific) there were FIVE twitter updates that said this:

Quote
I uploaded a YouTube video -- Kirby's Epic Yarn - Co-op gameplay #2 http://youtu.be/OfhHYrVpXQk?a
about 5 hours ago via Google
I uploaded a YouTube video -- Kirby's Epic Yarn - Fantasy Land http://youtu.be/ptvJX26vnPc?a
about 5 hours ago via Google
I uploaded a YouTube video -- Kirby's Epic Yarn - Co-op gameplay #1 http://youtu.be/xSkdd1MqZ2o?a
about 5 hours ago via Google
I uploaded a YouTube video -- Kirby's Epic Yarn - Rocket transformation http://youtu.be/tuRwcjaicLg?a
about 5 hours ago via Google
I uploaded a YouTube video -- Kirby's Epic Yarn - Power Mole transformation http://youtu.be/vpqM0dcmAyY?a
about 5 hours ago via Google

^ that isn't excessive at all?  I mean couldn't that be condensed A LITTLE?  Do you realize how irritating this can be coming into your mobile phone? Getting 5 messages in a super short time period that all say the same thing?  It's spam.

No, that is not excessive. In fact, it's pretty common for websites. It's not spam either. What would you do if you were a normal person and subscribed to more people? Most people tend to follow at LEAST 10 people, it's rare to have a specific tweet appear for more than 12 hours. Simple solution, don't follow NWR if you don't want to see their Tweets.

I think a better solution might be to have two different twitters, one with the news-news and one with the site-news.

Just a thought.

What do you do with Blue's Clues?

Really though, just don't follow them.  Check their site whenever you want to know what they're up to.  Follow people on twitter who say things you want to hear.  It's that easy.

Its common for news sites to send 5 tweets in the span of 10 minutes that all say roughly the same thing? So if you were subscribed to 5 major news sites you'd get 50 texts every 9 hours?

And to both of you, I WANT to see their tweets just not the 70,000 video tweets there are. The news is nice and the coverage is really good at major events, but the video updates are just ridiculous. What about just "I uploaded 5 Kirby's Epic Yarn vids showing new power ups"

10 in one day (like your original post says) is not that much, that is what I was talking about.

Oh okay. Yeah I mean, 10 in a day is decent if the content isn't repetitive. But sometimes NWR will post several times an hour of just video updates.  Thats all I'm saying.

I think you might be confused, TJ/thatguy.  "Just don't follow" is really bad advice.  Actually, it's probably good advice for DAaaMan, but bad advice for NWR.  Ideally, they want all the followers they can get.  So DAaaMan, bringing something that he feels could make the Twitter feed better *should* be very welcome.  If you disagree with him, by all means, say so.  The Twitter operator can take his and your opinions into account to try and make the Twitter feed better - or to make it appeal to more people.  "Don't follow" doesn't make the Twitter feed better.

AFAIK, there is no way to group YouTube posts, so there's not much I can do until we integrate video into the site.
