I'll throw my support behind the recommendations for DigiGods and SModCast. DigiGods is often funny and they cover tons of DVD and BluRay releases per episode, from the popular to the obscure, including foreign and television. And the hosts are long-time professional L.A. film critics. They really know their stuff, unlike the teenagers on IGN's other movie related podcats (which is embarrassing and awful). SModCast is Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier shooting the breeze about whatever they feel like and is often filthy and hilarious. Hit and miss, sure but I do laugh pretty hard most episodes.

I'll also point you to some CBC offerings which I think are pretty high quality. In particular, Quirks and Quarks (Science stuff) and Ideas (eclectic, thought provoking, intellectual). They sadly don't podcast all episodes of the broadcast version of Ideas but some of the better episodes get put up. Aside from those, CBC has podcasts of pretty much every show they do on radio and CBC radio is very good quality. I imagine BBC has similar offerings and I've been meaning to check out their podcast line-up because BBC also has very high quality radio.

I'm a huge fan of comedian Paul F. Tompkins, but it took me a while to get around to checking out his new podcast. I just listened to all three available episodes in one sitting. It's fantastically funny. He rambles and goes off on tangents at times (those times being any time he's not in a specific bit), but I absolutely love it. It's my new favorite non-NWR podcast (sorry Weekend Confirmed).
Insanolord is a terrible moderator.

What Pod's do you Cast?
« Reply #28 on: December 06, 2010, 08:07:33 AM »
I believe that here at NWR, we have one of the best podcast crews on the interwebs PERIOD RFN was my first podcast ever a little over a year ago and now I'm totally addicted to them. No disrespect to the NWR staff, but I had to search for more to feed my hunger.

So one year later, here's a list of what I listen to and what I think their Pro's and Con's are or a quick rundown of the podcast. If you listen to some of the same, let us know what YOU think. And please share some of your listening taste if there not listed here.

Radio Free Nintendo: A eloquent Nintendo based podcast
With Greg Leahy, the BEST podcast editor on the net, classing up the joint with his UK swag, DR. Metts, the boss that’s not the boss but don’t tell him, he doesn’t like it….., James “F’n” Jones, the pissed off opposite of Darth Vader and Mr Diamond J, the token black guy….. wait he’s….
This group gives one of the best collective conversations about games, Nintendo or any other, on the internet PERIOD
Podcast Beyond: Sony Playstation focus
PRO- Hilarious…… Greg Miller is a time and a half and keeps you on your toes. Colin is super smart and Ryan is a delight to us all.  It’s a “Conversational” podcast that has structure and a cult following. BEYOND! that it is by far the best Playstation Podcast….E V E R…

CON- The only thing I think is "wrong" with this podcast is......

Nintendo World Report's News Cast: Nintendo's dirty laundry aired here
If you’re tired of guessing what’s being released on the Wii, DS/DSi, DSi ware. Wii ware and the occasional Virtual Console, this is your one stop shop. With a side of sarcasm and great forum interaction, look no further.
The Don Tony and Kevin Castle Show: Can you Smelllllllll what the......!

Don Tony and Kevin Castle give their OPINIONs on insider information of WWE, TNA, and RoH. IT’s the REAL stuff that happens in Pro Wrestling…. I know that that’s a oxymoron but it’s entertaining and accurate.

 Game Scoop: Multiplatform Video Games
PRO- The IGN editors get's inside info directly from publishers/developers, the cast is usually pretty humorous and the team is usually comprised of the executive editors of all of the main channels(PS3,360,Nintendo,PC) At the end of the show they also play a piece called 8bit radio/Bleeps&Bloops...

CON- Knocking boots seems like an inadvertent shot at nerd love, good thing it has its own podcast now. Most times their topics are covered by IGN's other podcasts which air earlier in the week.

 Keeping it reel: Upcoming Movies
PRO- Again being a IGN podcast, they get the down and dirty and the true insights on movies being filmed and optioned, and who will play your favorite comic charter.

CON- Some of the movies mentioned are YEARS away, but that's the nature of the game.

 Nintendo Voice Chat: Nintendo focused
PRO- Yet another IGN podcast with rich history. Lately the current cast has been tons of fun and has re-implemented a new age of fan art.

CON- For those who LOOOOVED Bozon, don't care for it anymore and they just lost a 13 year IGN vet, Craigwaaaaaaaay! You will be missed…

In this Thread/1up Radio/???: Multiplatform news
At one point you definitely got the technical aspects of the gaming industry delivered to you but every since the departure of Garnett Lee.....

IT's still tolerable but recently you can classify it "rebuilding" at best.

Weekend Confirmed: Multiplatform and Board Games
PRO- You get a real taste of what structured Podcasts can offer. Having the Godfather makes it pretty cool though. It has a musical break that’s usually pretty cool. And MaDD remixes of the show it self.

CON- Could use some chapter breaks.

Three Red Lights: All XBOX 360 related material
PRO- If you're a XBOT, this is your crowd. They are a direct reflection of most gamers that exclusively play XBOX. The conversations can get a bit WILD and belligerent.

CON- They are a direct reflection of most gamers that exclusively play XBOX. They were on a long hiatus and upon return their first topic was, erections....

 The Wiire: All About Wii

It's been a while since I've heard it because I stop listening. Ian M. and Mike S. were the hosts, one sounds/act like a 12 year old and the other is just a pissed of editor that no longer cares for the Wii, but truthfully that's almost normal.

Hot spot @ game spot: Multiplatform
Another I no longer listen to, every game is either RAD or not Xboxish enough so they just crapped all over it. Their homework assignments were cool but that and ERSB theater were the only highlights.

NWR's Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition: A bit difficult to explain but a delight to the world.
Soundtracks to Games of yester year and thister year. Great fan interaction( you chose the Song and the rest of us do the guessing) From time to tome there has been a live web show where the fun is at its max. The Young Plumber is the host and has rotating guests from the NWR Staff. The only thing that would make this podcast a bit better would be chapter breaks at the different tracks to make it easier for replaying and a list of songs in the show description that shows up in ACC, but that defeats the purpose.

 IGN Girlfight: Multiplatform.... all Ladies
This IGN podcast gives you a slightly different angle on how REAL women gamers consume, rate, care and write about games and gaming topics.

 G4TV Feedback: Multiplatform Video
For the most part it’s a good wrap up of what they cover on their site and what they plan to have on their television programming. Lead by Adam Sessler makes it a winner.

 Sesslers soapbox: ARRRRG!

Exactly how it sounds and it’s insanely entertaining from time to time.

 The Official Nintendo Magazine Podcast
It’s like listening to a room full of Greg Leahys. Straight from the UK!!
....he asked me if the glass was half full or half empty. "Neither." I replied. "I see a glass that is two times bigger than it needs to be....

I do not listen to any podcasts.  Seriously.  No joke.  I can't stand them, for whatever reason.

I'm not kidding. I don't listen to podcasts.  It's almost ironic, but it's true.

Some podcasts I'd add to that list:

The GameCritics.com Podcast

PRO: Very informative and opinionated discussion of games in a critical (sometimes overly so) manner.
CON: Very infrequent schedule, though they have been trying to get it down to one every 2 weeks.  They also aren't the biggest fans of Nintendo, which would be a problem for this audience.  They also only talk about a couple of games per show, so it can get monotonous/boring at times if the games picked aren't ones you're interested in.

The RPGcast (RPGamer.com)

PRO: Very in-depth discussion of the latest RPGs and RPG news.  Can be quite enjoyable.
CON: A very random podcast and very loosely run.  Can be fascinating one week and incredibly dull another.

RPG Backtrack (RPGamer.com)

PRO: Very in-depth discussion of particular RPGs from the past.
CON: If you aren't interested in the RPG(s) for a particular show, there's nothing for you here.  Their opening skits are also very hit-or-miss.

Giant Bombcast (Giant Bomb)

PRO: Good discussion and coverage of the latest gaming news and releases.
CON: The cast can sometimes be fascinated by the most incredibly dull of subjects, like StarCraft 2 tournaments and what they're currently drinking.

Invisible Walls (Gametrailers)

PRO: Great discussion of the week's latest news and releases.  Video podcast!
CON: The podcast is WAY too short.

Epic Battlecry (Epic Battle Axe and Gametrailers)

PRO: Light and fun, with good coverage on latest news.  Video podcast!
CON: The Puns...oh, the puns...Also, the "news" tends to be a week old.  Kind of short, as well.  Releases aren't always consistent, either.  Some weeks there just won't be a podcast.

ANNcast (Anime News Network)

PRO: Great coverage of the latest anime news and releases, as well as the behind-the-scenes happenings in the industry.
CON: Sometimes their guest selection can be a bit underwhelming/boring.  Too many episodes with staff members/forum users as guests.

This Week in Gaming (ThatGuyWithTheGlasses)

PRO: Interesting analysis of the week's news.
CON: Lord Kat tends to ignore most game releases, and he shows open disdain for anything outside Indy developers in general.  Can be a hard listen sometimes.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

NWR dominates my podcast list right now - with Radio Free Nintendo being the best Nintendo-focused podcast available, NWR Radio Trivia offering enjoyable game music (even better when the games are familiar), and NWR Newscast filling in the gaps with plenty of laughs.

Other gaming podcasts that I enjoy include NLFM (chiptunes and gaming-based music, courtesy of the NintendoLife website) and Dojo-Show-Go! for more Nintendo-based discussion.  I tried listening to the Giant Bombcast... but lost interest after a couple shows.  They simply didn't appeal to me, and didn't provide opinions or discussion that matched what I was interested in.

Non-gaming podcasts are mostly focused on sports: Tim & Sid Uncut, ESPN PTI, and The Basketball Jones... although I've been less impressed with the last one recently.

Where is the existing threat on this topic? I posted mine there a couple of months ago and they haven't changed. Suffice it to say, I listen to too many.

I don't even get Bravo on my service, I can't get into those types of "reality" shows.

Ah... I was wondering what happened with this thread when checking for more recommendations.  Added a couple new podcasts to try out.  Thanks to people who posted suggestions!
