Since I see so many posts about their cube dying, and problems with it in this category (which, i think, should be in technical discussion), i thought it would be a good idea to make a thread mainly for questions that these people are having, so we don't have threads everywhere titled: "my cube's dead" and "moment of silence for my cube" and "cube problems".

Anyway, I have a question. My cube is really dusty on the side where the vent is and the fan is near. Is there any way i can clean it, and should i try to clean it? Will the dust get inside the cube and cause damage?

I have the same issue, although I don't really care (I don't think the dust causes any problems). I imagine, though, that one of those cans with compressed air would work quite well, especially seeing as it's mainly used for cleaning dust from computers.

The biggest problems that arise from dust are inhibiting proper fan operation (killing your fan), and inhibiting airflow within the case.

The GameCube runs a lot cooler than a PS2 or Xbox, so I am not personally all that concerned with the dust. I think it's more of a cosmetic problem than anything really functional. I assure you that my GameCube has been through a lot from being dropped off tables, packed with all kinds of crap when moving, etc. etc. It's never given me even a moment of trouble. The Battle of Hoth freezes now and then on Rogue Leader, but it's a problem with the game, not the console.

Dust can cause the Gamecube to not read the disk right and may actually scratch the laser. I usually keep my Gamecube covered whenever I'm not using.

I used to have a crap load of dust in both sides of the Cube.

Spent an hour with a tooth pick, carefully picking it all out. Tedious, yes. But the results are worth it.

I spose.

The toothpick thing also does wonders for the PS2, if anybody cares.

nothing the enamle in the plates and plastic in the tapes cause no harm at all, its just the highly corosive terrytowling stuff that completly destroys consoles

Most of the problems with the down console usally stem from a drive failure, and almost not amount of care will do anything for it, I'm waiting for my newest Gamecube to bite the dust which it hasn't yet, one of my brother friends droped it and the casing was damaged.

I think it's quite clear that the PGC forums has it's first inside joke. From this point forward, just the mention of "towel" will cause regulars to laugh hysterically.
