Entertainment Weekly reviews Zelda
« on: April 29, 2003, 08:59:38 AM »
Okay, I must say I've always thought this magazine was trash
and now even more so after reading the videogame section in it
today while I was in the waiting room for the doctors office.

For one, they devoted TWO WHOLE PAGES for the videogame reviews!
Second, they refer to the graphics in Zelda the Windwaker as...
yes they wrote this- "toon shading"

Next they classified Xmen as being released for ALL SYSTEMS...stupid!
You just don't do that, saying all systems, you tell people each system its on. just laziness and disregard of any respect for gamers.

Third they claimed World Series Baseball 2k3 is out now for gamecube

lastly is the beginning of the Windwaker review, the guy goes on for a couple sentences to start the review, about how he can't believe its not Zelda the Wind WALKER... WTF IS WRONG WITH HIM?!

That's what NINTENDO calls it, too.  It's not true cel-shading, and that's why Nintendo came up with a slightly different term for it.

Since when does EW's opinion matter, anyway. They gave Metroid Prime like a B because they said it had no story (I think someone didn't know about the scanning visor).

I'm not saying we should care what Entertainment Weekly thinks,
I just posted it for humor and such
I know they know nothing about games.
The only good thing about the reviews were that
Zelda recieved an A, Xmen received a C+, and WSB2k3 recieved an A-

Toon Shading  = Cell Shading
They're exactly the same thing, except some 3D Packages call them differently.

Funny they Call it "Toon Shading" in Entertainment Weekly, because "Zelda: The Wind Waker" was made using Maya.
And in Maya the "Shader" is called "Cell Shader" not Like XSI where it's called "Toon Shader"

So uhh... yeah... I'm a 3D Animator, so I know these things

You have to give them some credit, they're not writing for us, they're writing for joe blow who knows nothing about games.  Similarly, joe blow isn't a dork who watches Anime or Transformers reruns and understands what the term cel-shading means...by using the term toon-shading they give joe blow a fighting chance of understanding what they are talking about.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Couch is right- when some guy reading EW who doesn't know anything about 3D graphics (even the artists have the ponit out technicalities), "cell shading" isn't going to tell them anything. "Toon shading" is a much more descriptive term (which is why IGN has said they use it rather than cell shading).

i guess...
one more thing from EW...
they said all the gamers in the country were going to attend E3,
that wasn't their words exactly, but it was evident they were referring to
people who play videogames...not retailers or game industry people
.

Hehe, let's see what other dirt we can dig up on EW while we're at it, shall we?  Just kidding of course, who doesn't love Hollywood anyway?  Ok, ok, I'll quit with the sarcasm now.

Oh god, I'd love to go to E3. O_O Obviously EW doesn't realize it's only people in the biz that can go. Kinda sucks.

yea i've wanted to go since the first time i heard about it....early 90s

however I read a few months ago, I believe on IGN or in Game Informer
that they're going to have a new videogame convention and it's going to
be open to the entire public!

if anyone has read about it that knows more than what I've posted, can you fill me in
with some info about the new convention, thanks
.
