My 6 month review of Gamefly
« on: July 01, 2010, 02:55:10 PM »
History:
Started an Gamefly account of the begining of the Year
2 game plan at $23
Recieved 36 titles in those months which is 6/month.
Never had issues with shipping either way

Review:
We all heard of the horror stories about gamefly's past but from my experience it has been good, not peferect but still the best solution we as gamers have to renting games.  The selection is great, though they don't carry any of the OLD classics but they have all the hits for this generation (for both the handhelds and home consoles).  The games are in great condition, haven't had any that wouldn't play, most look like new.  Shipping is hit or miss.  I can usually get 4-6 days shipping both ways but not aways--80%.

Tips for Q:
Don't expect to get the newest releases on Day 1, by the 3rd months most games are mid to high availablity.

Two, don't add games to your list that you really don't want to play, I hear this all the time--"they sent my something that was 6th on my list" blah--if you really just want a certain title then keep your Q empty as much as possible.

Third, in the rare case both titles are in the mail, I have older titles to complete to play.  If you don't have any I would suggest buying RPGs or a game with MP support or even a game like MK.  A fall back game when nothing comes in.

Forth, check with your PO to see if they quick scan.  You can cut down shipping in almost half since they will ship your next game without waiting for it to return.  My PO employees don't always scan them in though but it works great when they do.

PS:
What's the score number under my name tag?  Has that always been there?

Where do you live and where do most of your games ship from?

PS:  It's your Karma.  Read this thread for more info.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I live in CNY (Syracuse) and they primary ship from Pittsburgh, PA which is like a 6 hour drive.

Do you mean that it takes 4-6 from the time you send one back to the time the next one arrives? If so, that sounds pretty on par and not nearly as bad as most of the turn around times I've heard.

4-6 days is my standard from when I ship games out to when I recieve.  It's not blazing fast like Netflix but it's not to unbearable.  I  just wish the fast scan was something automatic because it's up to the PO employees and the old farts during the week never use it but the weekend crew does.

GS does charge tax so it's actually a little less than $25/month for me but still like $4.25 per title.  Cheaper than most retailers and better selection.

I never had any problems with shipping from Gamefly; it rarely took more than 4 days between sending a game out and getting a new one. I canceled my membership recently, but only because I didn't have much more I cared about renting and wanted to save money.

I'm reaching that point now, and I've only had mine for about five months after cancelling it two years ago. I've had Darksiders sitting in the sleeve for about two or three weeks (one of them was E3, though).

I just reached the point where I couldn't justify it anymore. I have an insane, Jon Lindemann-level backlog of games I've bought, and the games I had out from GameFly barely got played; when I was sending back the games I had after canceling the account, I had to take Assassin's Creed 2 out of an envelope that hadn't ever been open, even though I'd had it for a couple months. When I canceled it I thought I might go back at some point, but that got a lot less likely when Hulu Plus got announced.

That's a lot of the reason why I haven't tried GameFly myself. I've got a stack of unplayed or unfinished titles, so it would seem a bit strange to get a rental service. Plus, with my gaming habits, I know I wouldn't get to the rentals right away, or would start playing something else before finishing them, so I'd just be paying a monthly fee to have them sit around. That's money which could be going toward buying games I'll never play, because at least in that case I get to keep them.
