Actually I am pretty impressed with the video.  It appears they are going back to basics, and it looks and feels like Mortal Kombat 2 and not Mortal Kombat 3...which will only be good for the series.  And since they moved away from motion captured characters, I believe they might make a great game...giving each character their actual unique set of standard moves.

That was pretty impressive looking. As enjoyable as the 3D installments were after MK4, it would be great to be able to go back to 2D. I wonder if they'll keep the weapons system intact however?

There was no Wii (or NDS, for that matter) logo at the end, so it looks like we're getting screwed (yet again). It is possible a Wii (or NDS) port will follow eventually, but I wouldn't recommend anyone hold their breath because its possible it will never happen, even though it should.

When you guys said it was 2D and going back to the basics I thought it was returning to digitalized images of real actors again.  Uh, this is just generic polygons.  So, yeah, I don't care.  Mortal Kombat's appeal was almost all style.  They'll get me interested if they return to the digitalized look.

It looked like there was some two-on-two action even... Capcom Vs style assists and such. That would be nice.

I liked Mileena's middle-eastern outfit  from the past few games better than what was shown in the trailer. That was previously an alternative outfit, I believe.

I knew I should have started this thread when I first seen the info. There was a press release or more info that goes along with that video.

The gameplay is 2-d, there is tag-team matches (2vs2), either on the same team or against each other online. Bloodier and more realistic than ever and more modeled after MK2 than the last MK I think... let me go look for that PR

oh and it's not scheduled to come to Wii, DS or PSP.

my favorite mk is mk4, my highschool best friend and I played maybe well over 3000 hours of it. Unless you like to fail don't ever challenge me. I remember showing my cousin how i could beat the hardest tournament on the hardest setting. My only complaint on this one is it seems slightly slower pace, but it looks way less glitchy and more fluid.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Announces Mortal Kombat

Brutal Fighting Game Created By Original Game Developer With New Name – NetherRealm Studios

For PlayStation®3 Computer Entertainment System and Xbox 360® Videogame and Entertainment System from Microsoft

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces Mortal Kombat, the most brutal installment of the landmark fighting game to date for release on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in 2011. Mortal Kombat is being developed by the newly re-named NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon.

The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series’ mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

“We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style.”

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”

Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game modes as well as the most extensive online experience ever seen in a fighting game. Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode” or compete against another team online.

Hope that answers everyones questions.

I think it looks badass. The concept trailer for the new movie (that will hopefully be made) looked awesome too. I think Mortal Kombat is going to make a huge comeback.

The last MK game I ever purchased was Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the N64. In my opinion, if you've played one 2D fighting game you've played them all.

I watched the test trailer several days ago and was actually pretty impressed. I always was a huge fan of the original film, even if Annihilation was unwatchable. This new concept that's being thrown around is interesting. Making the setting more realistic may or may not work in the long run however, given that Mortal Kombat has always stood out amongst fighting games for having a pretty decent storyline.

Just in case there are some people that haven't seen the the proof-of-concept trailer, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MqZn7E-mk&feature=player_embedded

i LOVE that MK Trailer. I really hope that turns into a full fledged film. Taking alot of the fantasy world out of it and injecting a heavy dose of reality could really change the series in a positive way as far as mainstream acceptance is concerned. It would be like Saw meets Undisputed meets Xmen. Dark, Violent & Full of Crazy Characters.

Ian the problem with the Digital Mortal Kombat images was that it limited moves and the uniqueness of the characters.

It was expensive to do costumes and have unique motion captured animation for many characters.  So characters were mostly just color swaps, and even still almost every character had the same regular attacks.  Same jump kick, same punches, sweeps and what not.  It made the game bland, and the strategies no where near as deep as Street Fighter.

The Mortal Kombat 3D games may not have been much better, but at least the characters became more unique.

Digitalized MK graphics was a big thing back in the day when computer generated stuff couldn't keep up. Nowadays, computer generated stuff is of exceptional quality, so there is no longer the need for digitalized images. I guess its a cool thing for nostalgia purposes, though...

The use of Michael Jai White was a fail.

Why? I've always thought he would be perfect for Jax. He's not the best actor alive, but he can kick ass...and he'd being playing...Jax.
