I don't like Metroid, I only played the demo of Metroid Prime Hunters (which I hated), and i've  never played Metroid II: Return of Samus. I don't know what I will pick, or if I will even vote with the remaining ones.

Metroid 2.  It really took the original and started laying the ground work for what would be Super Metroid.  It fixed most of the problems of the original...except for the lack of a map, but hey that is almost forgivable right?  Nope, which is why it is coming in 3rd to last.

I am tempted to voting Hunters, because it really is a good FPS, but except for the multiplayer mode it was really lacking.

Considering that Metroid Prime Hunters isn't so much "Metroid" as "Quake," I'm going with Metroid 2.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

What issues did it fix, other than adding a save feature? It still has all the same problems plus makes some things even worse, like having even more indistinguishable environments.

I actually think the levels are more distinguishable, but there is also seeing where blocks have blown up so you can move.  I think Metroid 2 is a better game than the first...but not great.

You helped me decide the next vote though.  Next I am going with Hunters.  Metroid deserves to be last.

I think this is going to be the most interesting poll of all for Round: Metroid.

If it didn't take so long to do these, I'd almost like to run one backwards - vote a game off the island type of thing.  It'd be interesting to do it forwards, then backwards - to compare the results...

Definitely the original Metroid for me this last time, because although it is an awful game it is at least a Metroid game.  Hunters is both awful and more Doom than Metroid.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

To me, this final is like asking which turd pile I like more. The original game is not terrible, but there are just so many flaws with it to be enjoyable now (no map, most rooms looking the same, hard controls, etc.). I just hated everything about Hunters.

I went with the original, but only because i've played more of it.

Going to vote for Metroid. Another thing you guys have got to keep in mind is that Metroid was released on the NES so there is hardware limitations. Also I liked the different passwords that were in the game. It had lots of different effects in the game.

Don't worry I'm with you.  The original Metroid game should be considered a war crime by how bad it is.  It was terrible 20 years ago, it's still terrible now.  Hunters might not be the greatest thing in the world but at least it's playable, which is more then I can say for the original Metroid.

Metroid is a game that is just cruel to play.  You had to memorize paths and map out the entire game basically, and record where you are going and where you have been...that should never be in a video game.

But add to that the frustration of having secret areas that must be bombed to find, but there is no visual clue to bombing the area or that the area had been bombed.  It gets even worse.

Then at the end of the game you will have to race time back to your ship before every thing blows up.  Yip sounds like a great design.

I'm going to suggest the Castlevania series for the next poll.

Castlevania
Castlevania 2
Castlevania 3
Castlevania Adenture
Belmont's Revenge
Castlevania Legends
Castlevania Bloodlines
Super Castlevania IV
Castlevania 64
Legacy of Darkness
Dracula X
Rondo of Blood
Symphony of the Night (not on a Nintendo system, but still worth mentioning)
Circle of the Moon
Lament of Innocence
Aria of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow
Portrait of Ruin
Ecclesia
Castlevania: Judgement
Castlevania ReBirth

Wow.  All this lack of love for the original Metroid breaks my heart.  Sure in many ways, it doesn't hold up, but not many early NES games do.

I still remember going over to a friend's house who got them game when it came out; when I realized the depth of this game, my mind was blown; of course, I was a pretty young kid at the time.  Being raised I had never seen anything like it.

My parents hated that game, though.  When I got my own NES and started playing at home, they were annoyed by the repetitive music.  And, they kept asking me questions about it.
Parents: "Why is that guy running around naked?"
Me: "He's NOT naked!"

I guess they thought the yellow was more of a flesh tone?   I didn't know at the time that Samus was a woman.  I don't know that particular revelation would have gone over well, anyway.

Castlevania sounds great!

Now you're just spewing blasphemy. Show a little respect. If Metroid was never created, we never wouldn't have gotten all its awesome sequels.

You just described every NES game that isn't Zelda (it at least had a map). A lot of NES games had that kind of design so it isn't fair to single out Metroid.

So why did Metroid both get a pass and get so many greater sequels despite a rocky start? Why do other disliked NES games stay lost in obscurity? Now there's a PB SPECIAL SERIES

Just because the later Metroid games were amazing doesn't make the original any less horrible.  I don't rate games based on what eventually came out of them, I rate them based on my actual enjoyment of them.  The original Metroid gives me no enjoyment at all and the fact that it's the game that eventually gave birth to Super Metroid doesn't change that.  It actually just makes me ask myself why I'm playing the terrible original Metroid when I could be playing the amazing Super Metroid and then I stop playing it and play Super instead.

Probably because the original Metroid sold better then a lot of the other disliked NES games.

At least Hunters is a tiny bit compatible as a DS FPS (Read: DS). Other then that, it's a giant 'meh'.
