I mostly agree with Stevey's pics.

The stick guy holding the controllers backwards is confusing though.

Considering Galaxy 2 is still very new and is about to come out in Europe, I think we should wait on a Mario Platformer poll for a while.  I'd imagine once more people get a chance to play Galaxy 2, it'll finish pretty high on a poll list.  Because right now the first Galaxy would probably finish ahead of Galaxy 2 just because more people have played it.  Which would be a shame since Galaxy 2 improves on the first game in every way possible.

Not really. One thing it lacks is a sense of discovery. Because it sticks so close to the formula of the first game, it uses a lot of the same conventions. I already know what to expect, how to deal with every obstacle, and how to defeat each boss just by hearing their names.

Also, there's no storybook equivalent in Galaxy 2.

And that matters to the quality of the game how?  Videogames aren't movies that I'm interested in being surprised over, they're games that I want to play.  To me videogames are no different then any other type of game, whether it be a board game, card game or some kind of physical sports game.  This is one of the reasons why I had no problem spoiling myself on all the stages and music before both Mario Galaxy games came out, because I don't care about what's in them because I want to know what I'll be playing in them.

This is why Mario Galaxy 2 is a better game in every way to me since it takes the gameplay of the first Galaxy and improves on it with better level design and a higher difficulty that makes getting all the stars in this game, much more satisfying then the first Galaxy.

Looks like Metroid barely won.  Shame, I would have liked to see Mario Kart. ;)

Mario Kart    - 5 (33.3%)
Castlevania    - 1 (6.7%)
Mario Platformers    - 3 (20%)
Metroid    - 6 (40%)

No doubt in my mind with this first vote: Metroid Prime all the way.  It was the first Metroid game I actually enjoyed, the one that got me into the franchise.  Great art design, great music, great level design, and a rare FPS that actually has perfectly manageable platforming.

I'm going to change something with this poll - all polls will run two days... unless the poll will run primarily on Saturday/Sunday - then I'll run the poll for three days and extend it into Monday.

Counting Zero Mission as a separate release from the original Metroid.  Not counting the Trilogy as anything more than a compilation - so, if you want to vote for one of the titles in it, vote for the individual game.

Yes, I included both DS games.  Screw you, haters. :p

To me, Metroid Prime easily (although Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is not far behind).

The original game was good when it came out, but it has not aged well at all. It's ugly, brutally difficult, and does not control well.

Well I am going to go with Super Metroid. Reason being that it is enjoyable and fun and has lots of ways to play through the game. Super Metroid also as far as I know started the concept of Speedruns. So it gets a nod for that.

I respect Super Metroid, but I really would like to hear why some people consider it their favorite? Maybe it's nostalgia, the same way people remember some movies being better than they actually are. I am not affected by that as I didn't play the game until after Metroid Prime had been released.

Here is the order I played the Metroid games in.

Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion(There was a station to play it. Didn't get far as I wasn't used to the controls)
Metroid Prime-Like got to the final boss but couldn't beat it.
Metroid-On VC before launch of Corruption.Didn't make it far. Not really sure where to go.
Metroid Prime 3:Corruption-Beat all difficulties except Hyper.
Metroid Prime 2:Echos-Didn't get far because I couldn't figure out where to go.
The rest of the games I haven't played so it will be difficult to judge.

My reasoning on Super Metroid is that it can be played in many different ways. There is a Backwards Playthrough of it on youtube where the player plays through the game by beating the bosses in the reverse order. It is a challenging way to play through the game. Many of the later Metroid games don't really offer that choice of play.

Super Metroid is 2D perfection.

I never even heard of Metroid until Samus's appearance in Super Smash Brothers, so I didn't play the games during their time. Starting in 2002, I played them in I believe this order...

Metroid
Super Metroid
Metroid Prime
Metroid II
Metroid Prime 2
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Metroid Prime 3

I didn't play Super Metroid until the VC release in 2007, and I still consider it the best in the series. It holds up remarkably well.

I'm probably the only one, but Metroid Prime 3 is my favorite.  To me it pretty much took everything I loved about Prime 1+2 and improved on it.  Not to mention on it's harder difficulties has the most intense and enjoyable boss fights in the series which really show why the Wiimote is amazing for FPS games even without Motion+.  Makes you say "Holy Sh!t" when you think about what Retro could be able to do with Motion+ now.

Plus it has one of the most incredible soundtracks I've ever heard and shows easily why Kenji Yamamoto is one of Nintendo best composers.

The reason I think Super Metroid is fantastic is the openness of the 2D world, and the subtle details in the game to give it character and atmosphere.

Super Metroid is full of small details that when you see them give you goosebumps.  The world is gigantic and I have had truly emotional moments in that game which basically has no story, which proves that they succeeded in the atmosphere.

And this isn't nostalgia talking I didn't play the game when it first came out...but truly experienced first and beat it as a virtual console game.

Super Metroid was the perfect difficult, a truly amazing world, and a game that never forgets you are playing a game...but succeeds in being more than a game.  Only two other 2D games are truly as special as Super Metroid and those are Zelda: Link to the Past, and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
