also in Arizona Mexicans refer to themselves as Mexicans, and only rarely Mexican-Americans. Hispanic sounds clinical, and is only ever used in public speech, and the census. Latino is probably preferable and refers to all sorts of Latin Americans. A Chicano is a Latino who lives in the U.S., no one is really sure of its etymology, but essentially means Mexican Diaspora

Not everyone from Latin America is the same, though. And some of them may be offended to be called something like "Chicano" if that refers to Mexicans, and they happen to be from Cuba or Peru or whatever. Latin America does cover a lot of territory, and there are cultural and ethnic differences, moreso than most people realize.

With a name like Richard Gaywood, this person has worse problems than being banned from XBox Live.

I've always hated the whole latino/hispanic thing.. some latino/hispanics get so riled up when called one or the other, and i don't get it. Maybe thats cuz i'm AMERICAN born and thus only feel AMERICAN despite whatever my parents background is. I'm just easy going that way.

While we're on the subject, i hate seeing "White (non-hispanic)" on applications.

I'm always annoyed when I see giant back-of-the-car bumper stickers that say things like NATIVE PRIDE or SAMOAN PRIDE or MEXICAN PRIDE or WHATEVER ELSE PRIDE.

I think we should be pushing for more integration, not encouraging separation. We're all the same species. We can all breed and produce viable offspring. It's like nobody likes being seen as a particular race, but then you have bumper stickers like that.

How about just HOMO SAPIENS PRIDE?

The problem with that bumper sticker is that young hoodlums would go around using permanent markers to black out the "SAPIENS" part.

This thing is, you can't choose what your nationality, so being proud of your ancestry is stupid, because you have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Actually, you CAN choose your nationality. Nationality can be acquired by birth within the jurisdiction  of a state, by inheritance from parents, or by a process of naturalization. So that means someone born in Mexico who later moves to the US and becomes a citizen now has an American nationally (although citizenship is not required, just naturalization). I think you are talking about ethnicity or race (which you don't get to decide and which will never change).

Tell that to Michael Jackson....
who successfully changed his ethnicity(black->white), gender(male->female) and species(earthling->alien).

Pride in one's nationality is the sort of thing that leads to things like holocausts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't pride one of the 7 deadly sins? You aren't supposed to be proud of anything.

And I don't think being proud of being "Homo Sapiens" is acceptable either, because what will that mean when we run into an alien race? We should try to get along and not think we're better than others. So yes, pride is a terrible thing in my opinion.

Sorta. Pride can be considered one of the deadly sins if identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self
