Monster Hunter Tri Tops 1 Million in Japan

Even when Monster Hunter sells modestly, it does pretty darn well.

Capcom's recent Q3 2009 financial earnings statement listed the life-to-date sales numbers for one of its biggest Wii titles, Monster Hunter Tri. Since its Japanese release on August 1 2009, the game has sold 1.15 million copies.

While this is a sizeable number, it has been speculated that Capcom is likely disappointed with Tri's sales so far, due to the wild popularity of the series in its home country. For comparison, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for Sony's PSP also sold 1.15 million copies worldwide in the same three-quarter period, despite being released almost two years ago.

Monster Hunter Tri is on track for North American release in April 2010.

Keyword is World Wide.
MHTri is only out in Japan and will remain that way till April.
Hardly a fair comparison.

I would also point out though that the console Monster Hunter games have NEVER sold well. According to Famitsu, the first Monster Hunter PS2 game (released in March 2004) sold 288,559 copies in Japan. The PS2 versio of Monster Hunter G (released in January 2005) sold 237,393 copies in Japan. Monster Hunter 2 Dos (released in February 2006) sold 692,228 copies in Japan.

I don't see how anyone could think Capcom would be unhappy since Monster Hunter Tri is the first console game in the series to crack 1 million in Japan.

How well did the Wii version of Monster Hunter G sell in Japan? I think I recall seeing it on the sales charts a couple of times.

It sold 236,020 copies, which was real surprising consider it was a port of a 4 year old game.

Why doesn't Capcom bring the franchise over to the DS? It sells extremely well on the PSP (a system where hardly anything sells), so you know it would do VERY well on the DS. If only they would do that. It makes perfect sense.
