Topic: Metroid Prime to Continue on the DS?

Producer Kensuke Tanabe believes there is room for more Metroid Prime titles.

 In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe, producer of overseas titles like Punch-Out!! and Excitebots, mentioned that there is room for one more Metroid Prime title on the DS.    

When asked about the possibilities of the Metroid series he said: "We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi."    

On the DS, there have been two Metroid Prime titles: Metroid Prime Pinball, a pinball-themed game developed by Fuse Games, and Metroid Prime Hunters, an online-based multiplayer game inspired by the story and gameplay of the Metroid Prime universe. Next year, the newest Metroid console title, Metroid: Other M, will be released, which is not associated with the Prime series.

I think I would like to see a full adventure prime this time.   Hunters took care of the multi, so I would like to see them focus on more adventure game in line with the cube games

I think you could do a 2D Metroid which maintains the storyline and style of the Prime games, but it would still have to rely heavily on atmosphere and scanning for information.

As long as it doesn't turn out like Metroid Prime: Hunters (thankfully they included that free demo at the launch so I could see how bad it was and not buy the game), I will be happy. It can be 3D (the  Metroid Prime games have been the best in the series), but don't base it on multiplayer.

I hope this doesn't get made.  The DS is best for 2D games.  Hell, I can't even think of a good DS game that's in full 3D.  So I think a 2D Metroid would make better use of the system's strengths and we've had a new Metroid Prime this gen, we're overdue for a new 2D Metroid.

How will the controls work?  The DS lacks the Gamecube's analog stick and the Wii's remote.  Would it use the touchscreen like Hunters?  That game fucking SUCKS and its controls fucking suck.  I don't see how you could pull this off without it controlling like ****.

And finally there's the fact that so much of Metroid Prime's appeal is in the atmosphere.  Call me a graphics whore if you want but I think the game would fail to grab me with N64-esque graphics on a tiny little screen.  Metroid Prime just screams CONSOLE game to me.  I just don't think it work any other way.

This is probably one of the only series I can think of where the spin-offs are almost unanimously unpopular with the fanbase of the main series.  No Metroid Prime fan likes the DS Metroid Primes or even considers them real entries in the series.  If Kensuke Tanabe associates those games with the ones Retro made then he is completely out-of-touch with the actual fanbase of these games.  It seems like since day one Nintendo has focused so much on who isn't a Metroid Prime fan, who didn't buy the first game, who wanted it be a different genre.  It reminds me a lot of the Star Fox series in that Nintendo seems to specifically want to make a product that does not interest the original fans.

You can make this game for the DS but it has look like **** and play like **** so what is the point?

DS doesn't have the horsepower to do a Prime game justice, unless the whole thing is 2D, but then it wouldn't really be Prime.

But really I thought that Hunters was more of a multiplayer experiment than anything. And it was a good one before the cheaters too. Not to mention that the other characters in hunters were awesome, and way more interesting than those in Prime 3. But it was not a metroid game, it was a handheld fps. Actually, I wouldn't mind Hunters being branched off in its own line of games for consoles. But as far as DS they cant really capture the atmosphere, complexity, and controls of the prime games on the handheld.

Other M is a drastic change (story focus and all that, plus an untested developer) and apparently Nintendo likes to release safe sequels along with innovative ones (e.g. Fusion alongside Prime).

I'm sick to death of the Prime series. Why the hell can't the DS get a proper traditional Metroid game like the original NES and SNES versions? I've been waiting for a proper sequel to Super Metroid for years and years. When will we get that??

Metroid is not meant to be a 1st person Halo-clone. I wish Nintendo would set the franchise on its correct course again.

I don't think you can apply that logic if we're talking about a DS game.  None of those three games were on the DS, and as has already been mentioned, the Prime games on the DS were nothing like the Prime games on the Gamecube and Wii.  There's nothing safe or traditional about a Metroid Prime game on the DS.

And? Who says it'll be the same again? Who says they aren't going to do an explorationy Prime on the DS? That would be traditional even if some technical details would differ (Hunters differed due to its design focus, not because you just can't do exploration on the DS).

Honestly, playing a 5-10 hour Metroid Prime adventure on the DS would be incredibly uncomfortable if they went with the Hunters control scheme.  That, in and of itself, makes it a bad fit.

I did get the most cramping in my hand with that game.  I did enjoy the game, but the arthritis like feel I got was not happy.  I experienced the same feeling with Mario Kart aswell.   It wasnt until I found a way to lounge around with arms and legs in differnt places did I get comfortable to play it.   

Other M is supposed to be more traditional, and so I could see the DS getting a non traditional game (read 2d) simply as to not compete against itself.

Other M is about Samus as a character instead of exploration, it's made by Team Ninja instead of a proven team, how much more non-Metroid can you get?

I think Other M will probably have core mechanics similar to older 2D Metroid games, but a completely different type of gameplay progression.
