I hated it when I first started playing. It felt like the computer was 'cheating'. I've gotten over it now, especially knowing that I can revive allies that die because I couldn't move them fast enough.

SF is definitely not as deep of an experience as Fire Emblem, as you don't need to worry about characters dying off permanently, and I don't think the combat is quite as complex.  It's a great "starter" tactical RPG, with really good music and colorful vibrant graphics.  There's also a bit more exploration than the FE games, as you do wander the countryside and towns a bit, whereas I don't think FE has any of that.

I fully understand why you chose these lesser known MegaDrive games for the poll (fresh discussion is always appreciated) but now I have no idea what to vote for as I don't know squat about any of the nominations. I was a Super Nintendo child, so apart from the famous ones, most MegaDrive software shoots straight over my head. What now?

What now?

Now you read the IGN reviews I provided in this post and make an informed decision.  Or you can check out NWR's VC reviews--they don't have all of them but they have some.  Or you can quit being a baby and just for for Shining Force II.  ;)
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yep, I read the IGN reviews. Not the most informative and even if they were, it would still be difficult to make an informed decision. The previous poll on SNES games was so much easier to vote for, because I knew all six well. With this one, it's more like making a guess based on vague, limited knowledge and if I'm to spend 800 Wii Points, I would like to be sure of what I'm doing. I could look them up on YouTube, although that would somewhat defeat the point of this.

Damn you, Sega MegaDrive. If your games weren't so obscure, I wouldn't be in this predicament.

I almost included Pulseman for the poll, but we talked about it a fair bit this summer, when it debuted on Virtual Console.

Alien Soldier is a game I would love to play sometime -- TYP is correct that it wasn't considered due to our having done Dynamite Headdy.

Vectorman got my vote; I've wanted to try that out for quite some time.

DrewMG - Hell yea about that Aladdin game. That is still to this day one of my favorite Genesis games. Beats the hell out of the SNES version in my opinion. Although that version is still awesome.

My prediction: Kid Chameleon ain't going nowhere judging by this discussion.

I'll call my brothers in Kid Chameleon arms to go to your local Virtual Arcade and be the coolest damn kid in the world and beat some evil dude.

Kid Chameleon is the only game in the poll that I already own (on VC). And I actually think it's quite good. There are lots of interesting powers and TONS of levels. There are many secret passages in the levels, as in a Wario Land game. I would enjoy going back to it, but I haven't yet decided where my vote will go.

Who goes first is based on the speed stat.

I would not say it is any less "deep" than Fire Emblem because characters can be revived.  Allowing characters to die puts a whole new strategy in the game.  You can use characters as bait.  Enemies can be made strong enough to kill characters, sometimes in one hit, or have spells that can kill anyone (desoul).  There can be special boss enemies with unique attacks and many different regular enemies instead of the unending repetition of fire emblem.  The sheer variety of enemies and characters makes Fire Emblem look like ****.  I am a big fan of the towns and exploration you brought up because it lets you actually discover secrets instead of this random "stop on space x" and some new guy comes out or constant dialogue in between battles.  The magic system also brings new strategy because it has limited uses and attacks multiple squares so unit crowding can cause big problems for you or the enemy.  As my avatar shows I am a big fan of Shining Force.

If you pick Shining Force 2 the difficulty settings are normal, hard, super and ouch!. Super is the hardest, for whatever reason ouch! doesn't seem much different from hard where criticals happen a bit more often.  The difficulty selection might be locked until you beat the game once but there is a code that lets you use it right away.

Good to know someone else likes it, or more specifically, someone else who doesn't have childhood nostalgia for it.
From playing it more recently (on Virtual Console), I feel like it hasn't hold up as well as I remember it, but I still have a ball with it. There's hundreds of levels and tons of different ways to go about the game. It is hard, but it's also a lot of fun, especially if you experiment with how you go about the game.

I haven't yet decided where my vote will go.

As someone who can view the results before the poll ends shouldn't you be required to vote first?

Actually, I know so little about these games that I probably won't vote at all unless there's a tie.

I'm not particularly fond of the game but I do own it on VC, so I voted for Comix Zone.  Besides, I'm morbidly curious what the RFN crew would have to say about the game so sadistically difficult that getting past the first level could be considered an accomplishment.

I remember I was at a friends house back in the day and he had the game and I thought it was so cool. Always wanted to play it more so I am open to it winning. I don't remember it being brutally hard, though.

Voted for Comix Zone. Only game I have on the list of choices. It has been a while but I think I got to the 3rd level.

Thank heaves for the Remove Vote function. I keep voting and changing my mind. I really am clueless about which of these games I'd like to play. I may just have to sit this one out and join in on the Second Chance poll. Now there I could make an informed decision.

comix zone FTW !!

i have it and never beat the damn game. It gets so fucken hard, even with invincibility I couldn't beat it. Stupid game would glitch up. It's a very cool concept but it's very tedious obscure puzzles.

Seems incongruous with this:

Shining Force II however, is congruous with everything.

Well, Comix Zone put up a good fight, but from the looks of the final results Shining Force II is the winner.  Yay?  Well, yet another RetroActive I get to sit out.  I wasn't particularly fond of what little I played of the first Shining Force.
