I'm pretty sure they do not home in on players when fired backwards.

You are correct, sir. That they do not.  But you can still fire them backwards.

Then what's the point? In that instance they are functionally no different than green shells, which you can get in first.

Must be a pretty awesome game and that time sink is part of the reason I avoided it. :)
It actually has a lot of issues. Honestly, the only reason I play it (and bought it) is because of so many other people here, otherwise I wouldn't bother. The community makes the experience. But yeah, if you don't have much time to game, or if you don't like to play online, then the game isn't for you.

Out of curiosity, I checked to see if my time in Mario Kart Wii has surpassed my time in Super Smash Brothers Melee or Perfect Dark. These are my two favourite games from their respective systems. It's been a long time since last I played them both, so I wondered if it had. And wow, for SSBMelee, it isn't even close.

I miss those late night sessions of Melee and Perfect Dark back in the day. Things just aren't the same now as a real adult with responsibilities. :P

I'll have to check my times on those games as well.

I don't know.  I always like the convenience of having the red shell when I happen to be in first.  There have been several occasions in close races where I've hit the brakes in to let someone else pass and draw the fire of an approaching blue shell.  It's even sweeter when I happen to have a red shell, and can send it their way right after they recover.

That is what I like to do too Sun. I always try and keep a red shell with me in case a CPU opponent gets ahead, and if I see a blue shell fired I will try and slow down so that another player can get ahead of me before the blue shell gets to the front.

I find that it's a very rare occurrence where hitting the brakes is a good strategy, outside of battles of course. Hitting a player who was just hit by a blue shell is also not a good idea, besides being poor gamesmanship. The person just got unarmed by the blue shell and has no items, meaning that they are not a current threat to you as you pass them. Plus, you're likely to tick off this person, and they'll try to get revenge on you, either in the same race or a subsequent one. Furthermore, by firing the shell you've just thrown away your own protection from an attack by third place. Lastly, if you're going to try holding on to an item with which to get into first place, a mushroom is a much better choice than a red shell.

If you can't get a sizable enough lead over the CPU players that a blue shell won't cost you any positions, you don't want to play any of the people on my friend list...

It is rare, but it can be a good strategy when the shell is obviously coming for you anyway and you're near the goal.  Even if the shell doesn't lock onto anyone else, the group around you can potentially be caught in the blast.  It's worked before.

As far as the red shell thing, goes, that's also typically done when there's little inherent advantage in keeping it...especially if I want to use another item that's waiting in the wings.

I'm not sure that I'd qualify hitting them with a red shell when they're already stopped qualifies as poor gamesmanship.  After all, you're playing a game where  people traditionally whack each other with every weapon possible, trip each other up with banana peels, hit players to pass off a lightning bolt, knock each other into lava pits, or otherwise try to impede each other's progress.  Since I tend to play as Koopa or Toad, I routinely get rammed by the heavier players if I happen to slip up.   My temper might occasionally flare up, but I just accept it as part of the game.

It depends upon whom you're playing with, I suppose; one friend of mine and I have tended to play as viciously as possible with one another ever since the Mario Kart 64.  I loved the things that you could do with the lightning bolt in that game.

That would be the only time where braking can be beneficial. Though be careful not to break too hard or people might pass you. It's probably better to just let off the gas.

I know that it's a game involving lots of battering, but that doesn't mean there isn't still some honour in it. In my circle, people consider anything which doesn't help you pass a player to be poor sportsmanship. Hitting someone after getting blue shelled, starred, knocked off a cliff, etc. falls into this category; it doesn't help you at all, it just hurts them. You can pass them without them being a threat (and strategy-wise it's a good idea more often than not to save your items for someone who actually is a threat). It's a similar concept to launching your items backwards at the finish line; your own position is already secured, so there's no more reason to attack those behind you.

I know how Mario Kart goes though, and I'm not saying I ever expect courtesy or complain if I don't see it. But even in Mario Kart, there can be good sportsmanship.

...except when you're playing by points, coins, or whatever.  So, if you're trying to win first overall, it does technically make sense to try to keep some of your opponents with higher overall scores from placing in higher ranks.

I understand that different groups have different rules of engagement, though.

True, if you're playing local multiplayer I can see why you'd want to do that. Online, it isn't a GP, each race just has an individual outcome so there's no benefit. These aren't rules though, no one is asked to follow them, it's a show of sportsmanship, so it can apply to online and offline game.

This is so much fun to do though. Once I get to the finish line I will throw back any item I still have (although it will rarely ever hit since you would have to be stupid to get hit by a random item thrown back like that).

If you're in a wheelie then it can be difficult to jump out of it and clear a shell or other item. Plus, online, there could be some lag that delays the firing of the shell, causing it to appear in your face.

It makes perfect sense to hit someone with a red shell right after they get hit by a blue shell. It stops them yet again and gives you a chance to catch up to them and pass them. It is especially critical if they are inches away from the finish line. That extra delay could mean victory for you.

That's exactly what I do!  The keyword is FUN.  Hitting someone when they're down is just about the best fun you can have in a multiplayer game (especially local).

It's the same reason I used to drop proximity mines by spawn points in GoldenEye.  ;D
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
