I'm using this thread to say the following:
I saw Weezer play last night @ the Jones Beach theatre in Long Island, NY and it was AWESOME. I've never had the chance to see them live so this was a real treat, though I didn't know what to expect. Despite some technical problems (Rivers' gear wasn't working too well) the set was awesome, filled with a good pick of songs old and new. What surprised me the most was that Patrick Wilson played maybe only TWO songs on drums, the rest of the time he was upfront with this sweet black and green Fender Strat doing rhythm while Rivers frolicked on stage. For a little nerdy dude, he's got so much energy! His stage presence was so quirky but fun, and when he did play guitar (and it worked) it was awesome. It was good to see them fill out the sound nicely, cuz Brian would go back and fourth from guitar to keyboard duties, and because Patrick was also on guitar, he was able to fill in rhythms or leads.. nice full sound (when the equipment worked ha ha).
They started their set off with a black sabbath cover (sorry, can't remember what song!) but only the first verse, then they transitioned into Hash Pipe (not my fave Weezer song but it was pretty awesome live). There was a funny moment where Rivers guitar stopped working in the middle of a song, just before the solo for "Perfect Situation" so he did a slide to the side of the stage, in front of a camera, and you can see him on the big screen miming his own solo on his microphone, it was pretty funny. Then there was this other interesting moment.. The band stepped off stage, 'cept Rivers, and he played this simple beat on the drums, then stopped. The beat kept going and the crowd laughed, not realizing he was using a loop machine i guess (i heard some comments from the crowd around me saying "oh he was faking! hahaha", but it was pretty appearant when he picked up the bass guitar and did the same thing. When he moved over to the guitar.. no luck. Looked like he was going to do a solo performance of "Island in the Sun" using the loop machines, but once again the technical problems were a hindrance. The band came out and finished with him though, played a couple of more songs and went out with a cover of "Should I Stay or Go?" which was pretty fucking epic.
My biggest surprise was how many people at the show went crazy for Weezers older stuff (from the first two albums) considering the majority of the crowd were younger kids, teeny boppers basically there for Taking Back Sunday and Blink182 though I was there for Blink too, one look at my avatar would make that obvious. I was slightly more excited for Weezer though since I saw Blink 2 weeks ago and once more a few years prior. This was my first time seeing Weezer..
Then again... they all went batshit nuts when they played "Beverly Hills" which I can't fucking stand, ugh..
Anywho, since I really haven't been on the forums since, well basically Friday, what'd i miss!?
