Check in time.

Well, I've completed the first two worlds, Gangplank Galleon and Crocodile Cauldron. Remember those names. They come in handy for the Swanky Quizes. As of right now, I'm 1:14 minutes into the game with a 24% complete rate. If this keeps up, I should be done in 5 hours which would be a good time since the other save file on my cartridge shows it took 7:44 for 102% last time. Gangplank Galleon is completed 100% but I'll have to go back to Crocodile Cauldron for a few items.

It's funny how the brain plays some tricks on you. I was searching for a DK coin forever in one level and my memory kept saying to check these certain spots over and over. I did and couldn't come up with anything just a couple secrets of extra bananas and coins. Finally after going over the level twice, I found the DK coin. And then, my memory recalled how I knew it was there but searched all over in that first area the last time I played this game. It's burned into my head to search this one area over and over before finally moving on. Very frustrating.

My goal of Dixie heads only is paying off. I'm at 100% in that regard. I have 13 deaths although I regret 4 of those since they were needless as I searched for that one DK coin I mentioned earlier. If I was thinking at the time, I'd have used START/SELECT to prevent death. So, there's a tip to help the latecomers. You're welcome. I've also held a sharp object while fighting Kleever. In fact, it was an actual steak knife. I should have gone with the butcher knife but I don't want to dirty kitchen utensils needlessly since I'd have to clean it after. I couldn't remember that boss from the name until I saw him. Same with Kudgel. I look forward to seeing who he is again.

If I do find myself completing the game fast enough, I may go for a second run with the mad monkey cheat. I'm curious how that would work.

As for the game itself, it is funny but after all these years of owning it and playing it, I only now have realized that the game is called Diddy'S KONG Quest, not Diddy KONG'S Quest. I can't believe I never realized that before. I always thought it was the latter. Wow. This is my first time playing this on a more hi-def TV and I definitely see what people mean about the graphics not looking as good anymore. Sure, they may be more pixilated but after awhile, you get used to it and they're not as bad like people make them out to be either. Can't wait to get back to Krazy Kremland. The picture in the instruction manual always made it seem like such an awesome level. In a way, it was so dissappointing when I first played through it. I think it is a couple roller coaster levels and then you are out of the park. What about all the other rides and the background stuff going on? But the beehives make up for it.

Forgot about how the Kongs will rock out at the end of a level. I love Dixie cracking out the electric guitar and wailing away. I keep feeling this temptation to use Diddy Kong to see what his animation is but I won't. I've run into 6 of the animal buddies. I loved the spider in this game. Squitter. I think he might be the best Kong buddy. Rambi is solid but Squitter allows you to go anywhere you want. Was so glad when he came back in DKC3. I don't think you could charge up the animal buddies in the original DKC. It's great to have Rambi charge up and then go on a Kremling rampage bowling over all obstacles in his path. Also equally hilarious is the bonus game, "Destroy Them All". Not only has the game taken a suddenly very vicious and violent twist but the picture of Dixie and Diddy mauling and Kremling and dragging him away or trying to rip him in pieces puts me in hysterics every time.

Haven't entered the Lost World yet. For some reason, I always liked to save those levels until the very end and then spend all my Kremcoins at once. Can't wait for my first bramble level either.

I don't care what people say. These DKC game are great. I'm already jonesing for my next play session. I want to get back into it. Pure awesome. What was also cool was some friends came over to watch a movie tonight and and so I was playing this in the meantime to get ahead a bit and so they watched me play for awhile. We were all talking about the great times we had playing this and other SNES classics. DKC2 still has the magic.

And the music. It's interesting. There are times when I find the music bland and I can't remember it as soon as I leave the level, there are some where I like certain parts of the songs and others where I'm just bobbing my head along to it and loving every sound. But there really isn't a bad tune. The forgettable stuff doesn't leave an unpleasant memory in your mind so all you remember is the good stuff. And the good stuff rocks. Playing through Klump's Klaim has this epic mining tune in the background and Hot Head Bop also has a great sound to it's level. But the tunes I keep coming back for are the Swanky Swing which is such a perfect gameshow sound and Funky's theme. This is the best Funky theme in all the DK games.

Anyways, that's just my ramblings for now and look forward to more action tomorrow.

That's more acceptable.

So, I've been trying to figure out how I can incorporate more synchronicity to apply for the Synchronized Simian badge. Right now, the best idea I have is to keep a Rock Band Guitar by my side and then when I finish the level with Dixie, I can rock along with my guitar. But I must find more ways of synchronization.

Also, where is everybody? I know, NWR is trying to crash the party with their Metroid Marathon but c'mon. This D K C we're talking about. I'm looking for more reminicing and people joining in the smackdown of this game. Seriously, grab a copy and join in. Even if you don't want to get 102% or win a badge. This game is awesome and deserves your attention. It's about to get some more of mine.

Holy crap Khushrenada :D We're not gonna add more badge rules, it's long enuff already.

I'm not looking forward to those 2 DK coins where they show up for a split second on the end level meter...I think Web Woods and a bayou level in Krazy Kremland... if you miss you have to do the whooooole level over again. arg

Here I go

58 minutes in I'm at Kudgel, with all secrets so far, and I haven't died.

Suck on that Khushrenada

I just made it past Bramble Scramble and Rickety Race getting everything and without dying, too.

I'm done. I died 17 times; time: 3hr, 5min.

badges: red hat, Kleever badge

What a great game. The original areas are what really shine: the bramble levels, roller coaster rides, the trip through the bees hives, the last race level, and there's not a bad tune in the mix. It finds a great balance of new places and new enemies while keeping the feel of the original while modifying the basics slightly (like the character-toss, movable launch barrels, or the DK coins).

Some parts seem a little out of joint: the bonus levels are mind blowingly simplistic; the way you get to them is often bizarre like  jumping through a perfectly good wall or a spiked bramble vine to get to them... but some of them are well-placed. The screeching barrel enemies are more than a little creepy, as are the giant bouncy tires, and the 'timed' crocodile heads that serve as stepping stones. So weird.

Cranky's comments keeps things lively and the ending is satisfying, and the 102% ending is beautiful: a great experience from start to finish.

Rest in peace, RARE. Rest in peace.

Currently at Gloomy Gulch. I have around 56% or so and am over 3 and 1/2 hours. You clearly are able to remember this game better than I. Missed one of those DK coins on the meter. Will have to do that level again. But the important thing is, my dixie head trail is still intact even though it has meant loss of life to make it so at times. My death rate total is around 46 at the moment and sure to go higher. I actually haven't visited Cranky once this game. I was trying not to let anything slow me down. So much for that. Also, I wasn't trying to add badges. By playing along with the rock band guitar, I'm just trying to compete for the Syncronicity badge since I don't have a red hat or have any bananas in the house.

By the way, which physical challenge did you do?

Kleever. One thing that can definitely help your time is saving after every level, that way if things go badly you can hit reset and try again.

I'm looking forward to doing Echoes as soon as Mop_It_Up and Stratos are done with this (I think they were planning on it..)

Time to end this robust discussion.

K-hush what was your time? I am going to award you the Dixie head badge because I'm not gonna go back and count all that; and I win the least deaths award.

badges so far: red hat, Kleever badge, fewest deaths

Currently, my time is something like 8:20 or around there.  I'm at 93%. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to play the past couple days. I figure I can wrap it up tomorrow. As for deaths, I've had like 110 or something like that. I stopped keeping track it was getting to be too many. Animal Antics has been a curse to me. As for Dixie Heads, I've only had one error and that was versus King Zing Sting. Diddy ended up getting that level. I'd have reset and redone it except I had spent a long time going through Kremland without saving and didn't feel like doing all those levels over. As it stands, I just have two lost world levels and the final boss to complete. If I can do it with Dixie, I'll just have the one Diddy head.

I earned my Synchronicty badge by eating a banana and rocking along with Dixie completeing a level along with my Rock Band Guitar. I know you considered the Synchronicity badge acts as seperate but I always viewed them as the same badge. That's why I mentioned the Rock Band Guitar thing earlier. It wasn't to add another badge, just another way to earn it and add it to one's total. After all, other people could wear red hats and earn that badge or lose the same number of lives. So, why not just put it all under one title?

That means I have the Dixie Badge and the Kleever Badge or physical challenge badge along with my Synchronicity badge. Also, since I thought there would be others joining us, I never told anyone how I did the Kleever challange. I didn't want anyone to steal my idea. I held a knife in my mouth. You, know, bit across it like a pirate. That way, my hands stayed free. You didn't specify how one had to hold the sharp object. Best of all, I further synch myself to the game but acting like a pirate. Yarrgh matey.

As for Ape-ic Win, the most I think I played this game in a row was an hour and a half. As much as I like this game, I find I couldn't play it for long periods of time. Maybe it was all the searching that I'd do in each level. But after all, I found myself needing a break.

As for smack talk, the only thing I have to say is directed to every other poster in this forum. What the heck were you thinking missing out on playing this game again? You'd rather watch some other forum play a game for a weekend. It boggles the mind. Watching other people a game. What, you afraid to pick up a controller yourself? I guess the Wii didn't solve anything. I'd rather be playing, thank you very much. And then there was that other retroactive discussion. Yes, let me play Super Mario World for the 148th time. That game is so neglected when it comes to discussion of Mario games. It's wonderful that people could discover it after years of neglect and being forgotten. And of course, it would be a shame if you had to play a game slightly more difficult like DKC2 where it is a greater challenge to earn 100%, let alone 102%. I'll tell you another thing this game got right. After you get 102%, Diddy is a better video game hero than Mario. That should tell you all you need to know about what the superior game is. So, smarten up, NWR. You're on notice.

I'd warn everyone that they had better step it up for the next discussion but it looks like it will be Metroid Prime 2 and like everyone else, I'd rather watch that game be played.

"Animal Antics has been a curse to me"

Truly one of the hardest levels ever, at least the second half.

"I held a knife in my mouth"

dagnabbit, i said sharp looking object! I don't want people hurting themselves!

Final badges:

Khushrenada: Dixie Badge, Kleever badge, Kruel badge, banana badge

myelf: red hat, Kleever badge, fewest deaths, fastest time

Tie! Good game, that was fun.
