Capcom Joins Forces With Nintendo
« on: August 14, 2009, 04:05:00 AM »
Nintendo will help Capcom promote Monster Hunter Tri overseas, while Capcom announces a new Wii game in Japan.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=19802

With the recent successful release of Monster Hunter Tri in Japan, Capcom is working to repeat this achievement in North America and Europe, regions where the Monster Hunter franchise is less popular. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, Capcom will work with Nintendo in order to market the game overseas. Nintendo brings its considerable experience marketing the continually successful Pokemon franchise to this endeavor.

Capcom has also revealed that the previously announced Sengoku Basara 3 is being developed for Wii.  The series, known as Devil Kings in North America, is renowned for its historical hack and slash gameplay.  Set during the Japanese Sengoku period, also known as the Warring States Period, the series has many similarities to Koei's Samurai Warriors franchise.  Previous titles have featured Oda Nobunaga, the first in a series of conquerors that unified Japan during the Sengoku period, as the title character.

According to Capcom, the series is popular in Japan and has a strong following among female gamers.  Currently, there is no other information about the game.

I thought Sengoku Basara was Samurai Warriors, not Devil Kings?

You are thinking of Sengoku Musou, and that is from Tecmo Koei (not Capcom).

Considering the Monster Hunter games don't sell that well outside of Japan, maybe Nintendo promoting it will help sales.

Maybe Nintendo is helping with the translation so that they can release the bundle this Xmas worldwide.

I highly doubt that. On Capcom's and Nintendo's release calendars it's set for an early 2010 launch. The game has a lot of text and they may need to create regional servers to accommodate North American and European gamers.

Nintendo will help by sending emails.  That is all.  It's what Nintendo does for its own games it sends to die.

But I want the Black Wii this Xmas, so they might as well bring over the bundle while they're at it.

Ooo, Sengoku Basara 3. YUKIMURAAAAA! OYAKATASAMAAAAA!
That series of games takes history and twists it even in to more wackier shapes than the Dynasty Warriors series.

Good to see that Nintendo will give Capcom a hand in marketing Monster Hunter Tri. It'll need it to gain any more sales overseas beyond dedicated hunters.

Dynasty Warriors is NOT FUN (imho). Never played Sengoku Basara.

Still...

Depends.

Word of mouth helped Wario Land: Shake It sell a fair bit. How well did the Monster Hunter game for PSP sell? If anything, MH could appeal to the Pokemon crowd if it's somewhat similar.

They aren't similar instead of catching monsters you poach them and scavenge their remains to find bones, fur, meat or whatever so that you can get something to eat or build tools, weapons, or armor.

I swear on the grave of the Capcom 5 that I will refrain from complaining for the rest of this gen if Nintendo backs out of this agreement.

Well, if it's not fun we can go and complain that Capcom won't make another P.N.03 or Gotcha Force.

They can do that now since Clover went independent and Crapcom folded Flagship.

Or they should wait until Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is released.

I guess this means there will be some videos of Capcom's games on the Nintendo Channel. Maybe they could also use the DS download section to offer demos of their DS games.

But is it fun?

Let's see, I just watched a youtube video where a guy that a 1000 hit combo against an enemy army that hardly fought back. So, just about as fun as any Dynasty Warriors game. I've only had hands-on experience with the PSP arena fighter (think the Gundam arcade games or Gotcha Force) spin off which was mildly entertaining and quite repetitive.

As much as the Warriors game and games like it (Ninety Nine Nights, Creative Assembly's Viking) get criticized for its faults, I still think there is an interesting game to made from its concept. Being a martial arts warrior in a war zone appeals to me in a way that the much lower enemy count melee games like Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, and God of War don't. Then again, this might be a good case of less is more.

Melee games are limited in the number of enemies that can simultaneously attack the player because there's only so many that fit into range and melee attacks are much harder to dodge than ranged ones. Conversely having the player fight that many enemies with melee would mean a LOT of fighting unless he can kill a few dozen with one attack but then it becomes more like lawn mowing (Demon Chaos is the worst in that respect). Ranged attacks mean you can dodge a whole lot of incoming fire and have to watch out for not getting flanked and such. Games where the player has ranged attacks and enemies don't mean the player has to keep the enemy swarm at bay somehow. When the player has to come to the enemy anyway he can't keep them at bay, only kill them before they can hit him. I have hope that Dynamic Slash might feature a good implementation of one vs many melee but that's mostly me extrapolating from Earth Defense Force than any real data (gamescom is soon, can just as well hope for new info from there...)

Dynamic Slash looks interesting. Wish there was more footage than that 6 second trailer.

When I mentioned liking the war zone/battlefield aspect of the Warriors games, I forgot to include that I don't like one man army or lawn mowing aspects. Ideally, some light Pikmin-esque strategy and tactics would go along with an army vs. army melee game so your main concern is defeating enemy officers and commanders and leave the grunts to your grunts. In that respect, it looks like Brutal Legend might be the game I've been waiting for.

Would be pretty hard to port between them no matter what.
